SHERBURN -- Mass of Christian Burial for Brad L. Hughes, age 51, of Sherburn, Minn. will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Fairmont.
Brad passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 29, 2022, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. Memorials are preferred to the National Fallen Officer Foundation. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Brad Lee Hughes was born July 31, 1971, in Fairmont, Minn., to Gerald and Marilyn (Espeland) Hughes. He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1989 and then furthered his education by attending Alexandria Technical College for law enforcement and Walden University where he received his bachelor's degree in 2012 and masters in 2014. While in college, Brad graduated magna cum laude and received several awards and certificates. On May 13, 2000, Brad was united in marriage to Jennifer Mapson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome, Minn. This marriage was blessed with three children, Derek, Logan and Taylor. They made their home in Welcome and were later divorced. Brad's greatest joy in life was his kids. He loved attending their sporting activities, teasing them (especially, Taylor) and spending time with them. Brad began his job as a police officer in 1994 where he served in several different towns and in 1998 he became the Chief of Police of the Sherburn/Welcome Police Department. He also served as the City Administrator for Sherburn/Welcome from 2016 until 2022. Brad was reunited with his high school friend, Kristy Meyers, and the two became engaged in July of 2022. Brad and Kristy enjoyed watching movies and spending time together. Brad was a member of the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and Interlaken Golf Course for many years. He loved to spend an afternoon out on the golf course. Brad also enjoyed woodworking, collecting watches, puzzles, his pearl white Cadillac car, cooking, listening to Elton John and Joel Osteen. Brad could often be found playing with his two dogs, Max and Sadie.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Derek Hughes, Logan Hughes and Taylor Hughes; mother, Marilyn Hughes; fiancée, Kristy Meyers; brother, Brian (LeAnn) Hughes; sister, Stacey Braun; Kristy's son, Lance Meyers; nieces and nephews, Matthew, Kristin, Jared, Brady and Amber; special dogs, Max and Sadie; and other extended family.
