FAIRMONT -- A funeral service for Gerald "Jerry" E. Anders, 99, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with burial in Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Fairmont, following the service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont.
Jerry passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2022, at Ingleside Assisted Living in Fairmont, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gerald "Jerry" Elwood Anders was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Rutland Township, rural Martin County, Minn., the son of Carl D. and Anna (Harms) Anders. Jerry received his education attending District 73 country school in Rutland Township near Northrop, Minn. On Feb. 27, 1943, Gerald was united in marriage to June Gieseke at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont. To this union, three daughters were born, Joyce, Janice, and Joan. Gerald and June rented a farm near Fairmont for three years prior to purchasing the Fred Anders farm where they lived for 60 years. While on the farm, Jerry did custom work such as corn shelling and silo filling in addition to bailing hay and combining both corn and soybeans. In 1988, June and Gerald retired from farming but continued to live on the farm until moving to Fairmont in 2006. Gerald and June celebrated over 77 years of marriage prior to June's passing in November 2020. Jerry was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont and also served on the Rutland Township board for over 28 years. Jerry loved life on the farm and even at his older age, he loved going out to check on field work. Gerald and June lived a good life and set a great example for their children and grandchildren and truly treasured being able to spend time with them. A special treat was watching Jerry peel apples without breaking the peel. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed traveling and fishing and looked forward to summers camping and winters out on his snowmobile. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Joyce Peterson (Martin Hedstrom) of Rochester, Minn., and Janice (Peter) Serfilippi of Holiday, Fla.; grandchildren, Lori (John) Lawler of Bayou Vista, Texas, Troy (Sarah) Tyson of Zumbro Falls, Minn., Darren (Rebecca) Peterson of Rochester, Minn., Graysee (Jeff) Hempel of Prior Lake, Minn., Jason Henton of Lakota, Iowa, Amy Deilke of Hinkley, Minn., and Lisa (Brian) Klingbeil of St. Paul, Minn.; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Stewart; brother-in-law, Merle Gieseke; very special family friend, Delmer Whitaker; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Anna Anders; wife, June Anders; daughter, Joan Freshwater; son-in-law, Douglas Peterson; sisters, Myrtle Armbrust and Evelyn Burmeister; brother, Marlan Anders; as well as several in-laws and other family members. The family requests memorials be made in Jerry's name to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont and St. Paul Lutheran School in Fairmont.
