FAIRMONT -- Funeral services for Marilyn L. Sweet Borchardt, 83, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at St. John United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, October 20, at St. John United Church of Christ. Marilyn passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, at Goldfinch Assisted Living in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marilyn L. (Baarts) Sweet Borchardt was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Truman, Minn., the daughter of Lorin and Anna (Wright) Baarts. She received her education attending school in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1957.
Marilyn's pride and joy was her son Bryan. As a single mom for many years, Marilyn worked hard to provide for the small family and worked at KSUM Radio/Woodward Broadcasting for 32 years as the office manager. On May 4, 1985, Marilyn was united in marriage to Eugene W. Borchardt at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont, MN. The couple blended their families together and were blessed with over 34 years of marriage. Marilyn was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ where she served the church in many different roles. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Fairmont. Following her retirement on Nov. 30, 1994, Marilyn and Gene enjoyed making memories during their many travels throughout the United States. She looked forward to spending winters in the warm weather of Texas and treasured visits from family and friends. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Bryan Sweet and his wife, Mary Beth; stepsons, Mike Borchardt and his wife, Debra, Doug Borchardt, Rick Borchardt, Mark Borchardt and his wife, Tami, and Dan Borchardt and his wife, Renae; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Smith; sisters-in-law, Delores Baarts, Judy (Wayne) Frank, Gloria Oveson, and Carol Borchardt; brother-in-law, Roger (Doris) Borchardt; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Lorin and Anna Baarts; husband, Eugene Borchardt; brothers, Jim Baarts, Merlyn Baarts and his wife, Marsha; sisters, Janice Bicknase and husband Ray, Edythe Bonstead and husband, Leonard, and Eunice Koestler; brother-in-law, Ben Smith; as well as many other in-laws and extended family. The family requests memorials be given in Marilyn's name to the Marilyn Sweet Borchardt Charitable Fund which provided college scholarships to the children of single mothers through Dollars for Scholars.
