Danial Lee Whitman

EAST CHAIN -- Danial "Dan" Lee Whitman passed away Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022. Dan was a strong, reliable, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He leaves behind his wife, Terry (Gerhardt); his son and daughter-in-law, Bart and Charmaine Whitman; daughter, Emily Almine; grandchildren, Jericho and Evangeline Ibarra, and Keely and Arabella Whitman; brothers, Mike and Scott Whitman; and sisters, Brenda Whitman and Janet (Curt) Dirksen. His celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the East Chain Activity Center, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Dan had a very successful career as the Martin County Assessor, including not only local positions but also serving as a state legislative advisor, 10+ years on the executive board of the MN Counties Computer Cooperative, and president of the MN Association of Assessing Officers. Dan had many hobbies. He spent over 30 years trout fishing in southeastern MN, he was an avid deer hunter, and he enjoyed working on his 130-year-old historic home in East Chain. He liked riding motorcycle and loved traveling to new places. He was an accomplished cook, often asked to cook for church, friends, family members and special events. Dan was a loving and caring husband to Terry for 42 years as well as a devoted father, grandfather and friend to many. He would regularly plan fun family outings, including fishing, baseball games, and special trips to places like Mexico, Florida and the Atlantic coast. But most important to Dan was his love of Jesus Christ. For several years he traveled around the Midwest singing in the Spokesmen Quartet, telling his story about how Jesus brought him from death to new life. He started the Midwest Quartet Association to provide a platform for others to share their gospel music and platform to share their faith stories. He attended, served and helped lead East Chain Evangelical Free Church for over 30 years. He generously supported missionaries and missions organizations around the globe, and personally served in foreign mission works on 3 separate continents, doing everything from helping to build orphanages in Romania and hospital projects in Congo to distributing Bibles and gospel materials in Mexico. He did it all for one reason: he wanted others to know about the love of Jesus Christ. If he could choose a legacy to leave, it would be this: "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
