Dick W. Gould was born June 11, 1931, in Manyaska Township to Edwin and Mayme (Nelson) Gould. He attended District 50 Country School and U of M Ag School. Dick was very active in 4-H and loved showing livestock and later rode horses in the show ring. Dick served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. After completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he spent the remaining time stationed at Mainz, Germany and played football, basketball and baseball for the base teams. In 1956, Dick married Helen Borchardt and was blessed with three children, Mark, Scott and Tari. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before Helen died in December 2018.
When taking night classes at the army base, he was encouraged to pursue sales. After his discharge, he sold cars for Marquart Motors in Jackson, and Beyers Lincoln Mercury in Fairmont, Wear Ever Aluminum and then spent 50 years traveling MN, IA, ND, SD, and NE as a manufacturer’s rep for furniture companies. He was always grateful to Jay Pieser for his help and encouragement. Dick always said “I had 50 years of fun going to work,” as he loved his friendships with his dealers. Being a farmer at heart, he loved checking out the progress of the crops and seeing livestock out grazing as he drove through his sales territory. Keeping his yard in pristine condition was important to him. He was also a proud father and grandpa and enjoyed following his children’s activities and accomplishments. As an avid Cardinal’s fan, he didn’t want to be a snowbird and miss seeing the Cardinal activities at the school. He served on the football ‘chain gang’ for many years. He enjoyed being a host father to Ralf Hamann – Germany, Barbara Parodi – Chile, Ann Marie Thielsen – Germany and Dave Murphy – Fairmont. Hosting foreign exchange students started his love for travel. He and Helen toured nearly 40 countries throughout the years. We are grateful to the staff and residents of Goldfinch and Lakeview Homes for their welcome, especially his good friend, Elaine Krueger. Dick is survived by his children, Mark (Karen) of Oconomowoc, Wis., Scott (Teresa) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tari Riley of Fairmont; grandchildren, Kristian Gould, Marit Gould, David Gould, Celia Gould, Jami Riley, Robby Riley and Sasha Riley; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Barbakken and Henry and Nils Gould; and siblings, Helen (John) Houle, and Jack (Sue) Gould. Along with his parents, Edwin and Mayme Gould, Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Gould; second mother, Margaret Gould; sisters, Beret Saari and Sarah Malo; and brother, Fritz Gould.
