Leland Eugene Ricard

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — Our communities sadly lost a pillar on Monday, April 4, 2022, when Leland Eugene Ricard, favorably known by many as “Gene” passed away at his home. His contributions to the lives of many include being the ultimate handyman and DIY’er; stroke be damn, no repair or renovation project would stop him. From donating his time to neighbors in need, to serving in the Vietnam War as Corporal Ricard, Leland was, and will always be, an epitome of “paving the path for those yet to follow.” Nascar enthusiast, artisan of his construction craft, master cook and barbecuer, lover of animals, nature, and all of its bounties, and so much more, all do little to expose the many facets of this wonderful man and father. A man of few words, but one who always exemplified the sticking to one’s values and personal character. Perhaps you silently rode next him, or was his latest victim at cribbage, or maybe you’re one who frequently sought solace in his constant resolve, all who interacted with Leland testify that this man’s shear presence always overshadowed his meek and quiet persona. Leland was never one to ask for help, but oh how he constantly strove to provide, even when he had little to give or when it was done so in a determent to himself. Never seeking praise or attention, all who were blessed in meeting and knowing Leland readily trusted in him as a foundational cornerstone, even if not consciously deciding to; that’s just the type of man he was, our rock. Though he never proclaimed his stance on faith, Leland embodied the many Christian tenents, instilling them in all who were around him, while rarely evening taking note of himself doing so. A true a workaholic, life defined through his “works’ and not his words, thankfully for all, his efforts were in abundance. Leland is survived by the loving communities of Shelbyville, Tenn., and Fairmont, Minn., along with his three children, Stephen, David, and Kristi, and his significant other of many years, Regina Hale. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lucille Ricard; brother, Darwin Ricard; and two sisters, Florence May and Sharon Redican. A soldier and a friend. A motivator and a protector. A son, a brother, and a father. A teacher, guide, and role model, his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone he interacted with as well as those he touched but never met. We will be meeting for a service at 11:45 a.m. on July 25, at Fort Snelling Cemetery, 7601 34th Ave. S. in Minneapolis, Minn., with a celebration of life afterwards from 1-6 p.m. at Green Acres Event Center, 14150 Pioneer Trail in Eden Prairie, Minn. Share your stories of remembrance during the Fort Snelling and celebration of life services.
