Donald ‘Don’ G. Coombes
FAIRMONT — A memorial service for Donald “Don” G. Coombes, age 89, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth, Minn. Inurnment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont, with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church in Blue Earth.
Don passed away Saturday afternoon, May 28, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in St. James, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Donald Gene Coombes was born April 18, 1933, in Center Creek Township, rural Granada, Minn., the son of Bryan and Stella (Spittler) Coombes. Don graduated from Granada High School in 1951. On July 20, 1952, Don was united in marriage to Shirley Jordahl. This union was blessed with two daughters, Debbie and Lori. In December of 1954, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served with Co. B 41st Engineer Bn. 10th Inf. Div. stationed in Kitzengen, Germany. He earned his honorable discharge in December of 1957. Don and Shirley then resided on a farm near Granada where Don farmed for 20 years. In 1971, Don and Marland Ziemer started Mar-Don Builders, Inc. in Fairmont. The business sold grain bins, grain dryers and equipment, steel buildings, and other agricultural products. Don remained with Mar-Don Builders until his retirement in 1997, after twenty-seven and a half years in the business. After retiring, Don and Shirley moved to the Village Cooperative in Fairmont in the fall of 2006 and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in July. Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Shirley Coombes of Fairmont, Minn.; daughters, Debbie Kanalas of Welcome, Minn., and Lori (Bob) Sorensen of Fairmont, Minn.; grandchildren, Jason Sorensen of Fairmont, Jessica (Barry) Vossler of Oaks, N.D., Eric Sorensen of Mankato, Minn., and Travis Kanalas (fiancé, Tyler Lake) of Welcome, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Alex, Danny, and Isabelle Sorensen, and Evan and Xavier Vossler; sisters, Anne Falzone, and Janet Wertjes; brothers-in-law, Jack Studer, and John (Maryann) Jordahl; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Along with his parents, Bryan and Stella Coombes, Don was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Sidney and Roselyn Jordahl; brothers, Dean (Arlene) Coombes, William (Velma) Coombes, Max (Ruth) Coombes, and Harold (Alice) Coombes; sisters, Helen (Cecil) Larson, Margaret (Richard) Squire, Clara (Arland) Fritz, Mary Lou (Lyle) Schlemme, Fern (Wayne) Anderson, Rita Studer, and Joyce Coombes; and brothers-in-law, Ronald Wertjes, and Joseph Falzone.
