David Dean Espeland

GAYLORD — David Dean Espeland of Gaylord, Minn., formerly of Winnebago, Minn., entered his eternal home Tuesday, March 22, 2022, after a short battle with cancer. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, Minn., with Pastor Mathew Raugh officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 1, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

David was born Oct. 30, 1955, in Winnebago, Minn., to Bernard “Ben” Espeland and Nancy (Roerig) Espeland. He was baptized on Dec. 5, 1955, and confirmed May 31, 1970, both at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Winnebago. He graduated from Winnebago High School in 1974 and went to Concordia College in St. Paul and Mankato State, where he received his bachelors degree. He married Marjorie Kay Schiffman on June 14, 1980, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Raymond, Minn. After their marriage, the couple resided in Mankato, South Dakota, and then Gaylord. Dave and Marjorie were blessed with two children, Jeremy and Rachel. Dave was employed at Michael Foods in Gaylord, retiring in 2020. They shared 41 years of marriage. Dave was an accomplished pianist and organist, serving as organist at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington up until shortly before his passing. He sang in choir, on the outreach committee, enjoyed being with family, fishing and following the Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves. Dave is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Gaylord; son, Jeremy (Kelsey) of Winnebago; daughter, Rachel of Glencoe; parents, Ben and Nancy Espeland of Winnebago; brothers, Doug (Laurie) of Wausau, Wis., Dan (Lori) of Truman; brother-in-law, LeRoy (Kathy) Schiffman of Eagle Lake; sister-in-law, Pat (Doug) Deppe of Star, Idaho; cousins, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lawrence and Minnie Espeland, Leo and Helen Roerig; uncle and aunts, Willard (Joyce) Espeland, Earl and Clarice Anderson, Don and Mary Mohn, Bob and Joan Brown; cousin, Jason Espeland; mother-in-law, Lorraine (Emil) Weberg; and father-in-law, Marlin Schiffman.
