Duane Nelson
ROSEVILLE — Duane “Dewey” Nelson, age 95 of Roseville, Minn., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 Roselawn Ave. W. in Roseville, Minn., with visitation one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow.
Dewey was born in Pipestone, Minn. and raised in Mankato, Minn. He was a WW2 Navy veteran, and after returning from his service he continued his education by earning a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Mankato State University. Dewey earned a place in the Hall of Fame for both basketball and tennis at Mankato State. It was also at Mankato State where he met Ardyce Johnson who he married in 1950. Dewey started his 51 year career as an educator in Staples Minn., and went on to teach at Alexander Ramsey-Roseville for 31 years. He also coached football, basketball and tennis. After retiring from Ramsey, he taught at Macalester College for 3 years and the U of M for 15 years. He and Ardyce shared 71 happy years together enjoying their kids and grandkids and traveling with friends. Dewey was a gifted storyteller and was known for telling stories about the people he met and the places he went. All who knew him loved to listen. He will be greatly missed. Dewey is survived by his loving wife, Ardyce (Johnson) Nelson; son, Douglas (Pat); daughter, Laurie (Bob) Determan; sister, Marcia LaCore; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Anne Nelson; and his sisters, Maxine Nelson and Carol Finney.
