James ‘Jim’ Hanson

PHILIPS, Wis. — James “Jim” Hanson, 66, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, in his home of a heart attack. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church, 101 North Main Street in Hanley Falls, Minn. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the start of the service. Heindl-Nimsgern Funeral Home of Phillips, Wis. is assisting the family.

He was born March 8, 1955, in Granite Falls, Minn, to James and Donna Lou (Nelson) Hanson. Jim grew up in a loving family with two sisters, Carla and Jenifer, in Fairmont, Minn. He attended school there until graduation. He loved all sports and excelled at them. He especially loved baseball. After graduation, he went to Indian Hills Jr. College in Centerville, Iowa, to play baseball. He then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in education. He taught PE and then went on to coach and teach. He married Jeanne Melick in 1981, and they had two daughters, Nicole and Ashley. Jim and Jeanne raised their girls in Fargo, N.D. Many of those years were spent at the lake, golfing and coaching. He supported their children in their activities. He followed in his father’s footsteps, working at Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa as a state supervisor until his retirement. Upon retirement, he moved to Phillips, Wis. to be closer to his family. He enjoyed meat raffles at the local bowling alley, golfing, spending time with friends and family. He was a proud grandfather to Austin and Brynn Nelson and Hunter and Ryder Raskie. He was always so proud of his family and his life was an expression of his love. He is survived by his daughters, Nicole (Eric) Nelson, Ashley Raskie and their mother, Jeanne; grandchildren, Austin and Brynn Nelson, and Hunter and Ryder Raskie; his sister, Jenifer (Mike) Klein; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Carla.
