Helen C. (Leopold) Hager was born April 30, 1929, in Heron Lake, Minn., the daughter of Julius and Ann (Paulson) Leopold. She received her education attending school in Heron Lake and graduated from Heron Lake High School with the class of 1947. Helen was a kind and caring person and had a passion for helping others. Following her graduation, Helen’s passion led her to attend St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester where she received her degree in nursing. Helen then worked for a short time at St. Mary’s hospital in Rochester before making the move to Denver, Colo., where she worked as a pediatric nurse for five years. Helen then returned to Heron Lake where she married Rod Hager at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake on June 11, 1955. Together the couple would make their home in Fairmont, Minn. where they celebrated 66 years of marriage and were blessed with three children, John, Tom and Patsy. Helen loved the medical world and truly enjoyed working and talking medical experiences with her nurse and doctor colleagues. She treasured the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mother for her children and welcomed the opportunity to return to the medical field working as a nurse at the Fairmont Medical Clinic before retiring at the age of 59. Helen was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and was a member of the lady’s circle. She was strong in her faith and lived her life serving and caring for others. In her spare time, Helen enjoyed playing bridge and was in bridge club. In her later years, she took pride in knitting beautiful caps for newborn babies donating hundreds of caps over the years.
