Nellie Catherine (Blanck) Oanes was born on December 3, 1917, on the family farm in Fox Lake, Township, rural Martin County, MN, the daughter of Irvin and Catherine (Growth) Blanck. She was baptized at Waverly Lutheran Church in February 1918 and was later confirmed.

Nellie began her education attending District #63 in Fox Lake Township through the 4th grade. She then moved with her family to Welcome where she attended school for a short time and later moved to Fairmont where she graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1937.

In her youth, Nellie worked summers at the Fairmont Canning Company. Following her graduation, Nellie worked at Woolworth Store in Fairmont for six years.

In September 1948, Nellie was united in marriage to Edward Oanes at Salem Church in Fairmont, MN. Together the couple made their home on a farm near Truman and were blessed with two sons, Paul and Steven.

During her teen years, Nellie enjoyed trips to Lake Koronis near Paynesville, MN and continued the yearly trek there for many years. She worked as a historian for Farm Bureau, and she kept an activity book that was filled with snap shots and clippings of trips and meetings. Her hard work was rewarded with a first place in the district during an annual meeting. Nellie worked at the Trimont Nursing Home when it first opened and enjoyed her time there caring for those in need. She was active in the Waverly Church and looked forward to her study groups. Nellie also served others by helping with daily needs and helping others after surgical procedures. Nellie’s caring spirit and compassion for others will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Paul Oanes and his wife, Carolyn of Fairmont, MN, and Steven Oanes and his wife, Sue of Oregon, WI; grandchildren, Joshua Oanes and his wife, Ai-Nhi of Mankato, MN, Christina Oanes and her husband, David of Augusta, GA, Stephany Oanes of Oregon, WI, and Sara Oanes of Oregon, WI; great-grandchildren, Macala, Ripley, and Cerena; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin and Catherine Blanck; husband, Edward Oanes; two sisters, Grace Pedersen and Mildred Blanck; and a brother, Roland Blanck.
