Dessie Frier Newman

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Dessie Frier Newman, 68, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., formerly of Fairmont, Minn., and West Columbia, S.C., passed away Saturday, July 17, 2021. A church service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, at Old St. Andrew’s Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road in Charleston, S.C. Following the service, there will be a celebration of life reception in Gilchrist Hall next to the church.

Dessie was born July 10, 1953, in Allendale, S.C., the youngest child of the late Roy M. Frier and Evelyn Ernestine DeLoach Frier. Dessie was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and a generous human being. In March of 1982, at the young age of 28, she got married, became the full-time mother to an eight-year-old and nine-year-old, and moved from Columbia, S.C. to Fairmont, Minn., all in the same week. As a girl raised in the traditions and hot climate of the South, Dessie adjusted easily to Northern life and thrived in the local community making Fairmont feel like a real hometown for the whole Newman family. Dessie also brought Southern charm to everyone she met and especially her close friends that she considered family. Everyone who met Dessie instantly concluded she was friendly, fun, loving, and smart, whether they were neighbors, friends of the family, or people from work.

Dessie enjoyed long talks with friends and family, reading, boating in Charleston waterways with friends and family, and traveling. She was the foundation of her family and large circle of close friends; they will miss her greatly. Dessie is survived by her husband, G. Robert Newman; son, Richard “Ricky” Newman and his wife, Dawn of Charleston, S.C.; daughter, Caroline “Cissy” Stallings and her husband, Brian of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; sister, Catherine Frier Grubbs and her husband, David of Crowley, Texas; grandson, Tyler Newman; two granddaughters, Emery and Parker Stallings; nieces, Dana Beene, Eve Campbell, Corrie Grubbs; her sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Lawrence and Carol Phillips of Atlanta, Ga., and their children, Dr. Elizabeth Kunreuther and Dana Phillips. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Roy Mahue Frier, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
