Vera D. Schuler

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. — Vera Darlene (Wetrich) Schuler, age 97, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Fairmont, Minn., passed away Thursday, July 8, 2021, after a short illness. Her wishes for a private graveside service will be honored by her family at a later date.

She was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Huron, S.D., to Harry and Edith (Hamilton) Wetrich. She graduated from Huron High School in 1942.

She was recruited as a high school senior to work half days at a bank in Huron during the labor shortage caused by WWII. She continued her banking career in Whittier, Calif. where she married the love of her life, Burness (Bernie) Schuler on March 24, 1946. They relocated to Fairmont later that year where she worked at First National Bank prior to joining Bernie at Guckeen’s studio for 20 years. Vera was a charter member of the “Sewing Club Girls” and served as the group’s president since its inception in 1951. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She modeled the importance of service volunteering at the Fairmont Community Hospital hospice program and gift shop for decades. She continued to volunteer in Green Valley until the age of 96 (in 2020), stopping only when the pandemic shut the program down. Her love for serving others was recognized in 2002 with the Outstanding Martin County Senior Citizen award and again in 2003 with the KEYC-TV Jefferson public service award. Survivors include her children, Renee (Jerry) Kielblock of Green Valley, Ariz., Jeanne (Ron) Yegge of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Pat Schuler of Green Valley, Ariz. Preceding her in death were her five siblings; her parents; her husband, Bernie; and son, Scott. Her quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor and sharp card playing abilities will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
