WILBERT -- A memorial service for Velmer J. Meier, 95, of Wilbert, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilbert, Minn. Burial will follow the service in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, with full military honors by the Nassen-Detert American Legion Post 529 and Welcome American Legion Post 553. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilbert.
Velmer passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021, at his home near Wilbert. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Velmer J. Meier was born Feb. 23, 1926, on the family farm in Tenhassen Township, Martin County, Minn., the son of William and Clara (Leiding) Meier. In 1929, the family moved to a farm near Wilbert that he called home for the rest of his life. Velmer attended parochial school at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Wilbert. He was baptized March 14, 1926, and confirmed on April 2, 1939. Velmer helped on the farm until entering military service. Velmer entered the U.S. Army on March 29, 1945, training in Camp Livingston, La. and shipped overseas Oct. 16, 1945, from Fort Lawton, Wash. He was assigned to the 800th Military Police Battalion to serve in the Asiatic Pacific occupation of Japan. He returned to the United States on Oct. 21, 1946, and was discharged Dec. 8, 1946. Velmer was a life member of the Nassen-Detert American Legion Post 529.
After his discharge, Velmer worked for several organizations and companies including a Railway Ballast Conditioning Corporation. He then worked at W. Hodgman & Sons Construction. Next, he worked at Fairmont Railway Motors which later became Harsco Corporation from which he retired in 2001. Velmer was a life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilbert, where he held various offices including being an Elder and Trustee. He was also a member of the Lutheran Layman's League. He and his brother, John, helped with the church cemetery and prepared graves for many years. Velmer helped his brother, brother-in-law, then nephews on the farm all his life. He was an avid Twins fan and fisherman, making several trips to Mille Lacs Lake to ice fish. Velmer will be remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to tease not only his young nieces and nephews but adults as well. He was affectionately known to his great-nieces and great-nephews as "The Tickly Man." In addition to his parents, William and Clara Meier, Velmer was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Meier, and John Meier and his wife, Doris (Sager) Meier; and one sister, Lorene (Meier) Bremer and her husband, Alwin. Left to cherish his memory are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, extended family, neighbors, and friends. www.lakeviewfuneralhome.net
