Thomas A. Doherty

FAIRMONT — Private family services for Thomas A. Doherty, 91, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Full military honors by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222, will follow the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Fairmont. Tom passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, Minn. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, social distancing guidelines will be observed, masks are encouraged, and the number of guests will be monitored. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Thomas A. Doherty was born Jan. 18, 1929, in rural Scott County, Minn., the son of John and Elizabeth (Nash) Doherty. He began his education attending a one-room country schoolhouse, graduated from high school at the age of 16, and received a degree in chemistry from the college of St. Thomas. His education furthered as he also attended classed at the University of Minnesota, where he met his beautiful wife, Genevieve. Following his education, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his county proudly overseas in Korea. On Aug. 11, 1957, Tom was united in marriage to Genevieve A. Mathe. Together, the couple would make their home in Fairmont, and would be blessed with eight children, Richard, Marie, Steven, Alice, Julie, Jerome, Maureen, and Joanna. Tom began his career at the Fairmont Community Hospital in the late 1950’s working as a lab technician. After furthering his education, he worked for many years as the hospital administrator at the Fairmont Community Hospital. He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont and a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. Being from the “City of Lakes,” Tom enjoyed spending warm summer days out on the lake and looked forward to some friendly competition on the links of the golf course. He found joy in challenging his intellect while playing chess with his children and grandchildren and cherished his quiet time spent reading and working in his garden. Tom enjoyed playing baseball as a young man, coached little league, and looked forward to Twins games as often as he could. Tom treasured spending time with his family and loved his Lord. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Marie Doherty, Steven Doherty, Alice (Randy) Martin, Jerome (Karen) Doherty, Maureen (David) Cordova, and Joanna (Mark) Lange; son-in-law, Lyle Johnson; grandchildren, Ashlee, Amanda, Kristina, Styles, Kenney, Caitlyn, Genevieve, James, Elizabeth, Victoria, Alexandra, Gabriella, and Isabella; great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Aubrey, Ayden, Josh, Aurora, Brooklyn, Lillian, and Lacey; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence Mathe and Al Mathe; sister-in-law, Rita Hansen; as well as many other extended family and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Doherty; wife, Genevieve; son, Richard Doherty; daughter, Julie Johnson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (infant), John (Adeline), Elmer (Ruth), James (Edith), and Patrick (Mary); sister, Mary Arnold; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Alois Mathe, sisters-in-law, Lois Harned and Beverly Mathe.
