Cornelia “Connie” Julia Murphy was born Nov. 7, 1922, the youngest of nine children, to L.L. Lawrence and Julia (nee Kennedy) Murphy in Guckeen, Minn. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1940 and then attended Mankato Business School where she completed secretarial and bookkeeping courses. Connie began her career as secretary to Mrs. Wentworth of the Fairmont Canning Company.

She met her future husband, Elmer Lenz of Fairmont, working as a part-time carhop at the local drive-in where she accidentally “served” a soda onto his lap. The two corresponded during WW2, and were united in marriage on May 19, 1948. They were blessed with a daughter, Kathy. Connie was employed by Erickson, Zierke, Kuderer and Utermarck Law Firm for many years. After retiring she worked part-time for Thomas Thurston, Martin County Auditor/Treasurer.

Connie was a devout and faithful member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church where she was an active and generous volunteer of St. Timothy Circle, providing benevolent services to the community.

She received an endearing gift of bowling shoes from her oldest brother while in her teens which provided many years of joy bowling with friends. In later years she loved spending time playing cards, was a member of a sewing group, and volunteered as treasurer to both the Fairmont Senior Citizen Center, and the “Grandma’s Swingers” at Rose Lake Golf Course. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kathy Braun of St. Charles, Ill.; son-in-law, Gregory Braun of Osceola, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Lester (Elaine) Lenz of Fairmont, Minn., and Warren Lenz of Albert Lea, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, L.L. Lawrence and Julia Murphy; husband, Elmer; four brothers; and four sisters.
