FAIRMONT — A private funeral service for Thomas “Bone” Mahoney, Jr., age 67, of Fairmont, Minn. will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Fairmont.

A public visitation will be 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, social distancing guidelines will be observed, and the number of guests allowed at the visitation will be monitored.

Tom passed away Wednesday morning, June 24, 2020, at Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul, Minn.

Memorials are preferred to Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul, Martin County Historical Society or the Fairmont Booster Club.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Thomas Patrick Mahoney, Jr. was born Oct. 17, 1952, in Lake City, Minn., to Thomas and Patricia (Hogan) Mahoney. Tom graduated from Fairmont High School in 1971. After high school, Tom attended Mankato State University.

In August of 1975, Tom was united in marriage to Susan Decker in Fairmont, Minn. After their marriage, they made their home in Minneapolis, Minn., and moved back to Fairmont in 1978, when they were blessed with their daughter, Melissa, and in 1980 with their son, Mathew. Tom and Susan later parted ways.

Tom worked for many years as the Martin County Assessor and later started Mahoney Appraisal in Fairmont. Tom was currently serving as the District 2 Martin County Commissioner, which he had been doing for the past six years.

Tom was a lifelong member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont.

He was the past president of the Fairmont Booster Club and a board member of the Martin County Historical Society.

Tom’s passion was riding his bicycle and he could be found riding throughout Martin County, and he participated in many RAGBRAIs. He loved reading, cooking and was known for his famous scotcheroos at every Mahoney family gathering. Tom was an avid outdoorsman and loved camping. He will always be remembered as being the jokester with family and friends and couldn’t wait to play a joke on them. Tom was a Minnesota Gopher fan and an honorary Chain Gang member. He was a huge supporter of the Fairmont Cardinals. He was inducted into the Fairmont Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Tom is survived by two children, Melissa (Michael) Leick of Apple Valley and Mathew (Leanna) Mahoney of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Madysen, Macy and Mitchell Leick and Nevaeh and Amaya Mahoney; four siblings, Susan (Ronnie Babb) Mahoney, Mary Mahoney, Mark (Brooks) Mahoney, Theresa (Ken) Rivers; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Patricia Mahoney; brother, Michael Mahoney; and sister, Kathleen Mahoney.
