Clara Ann (Matten) Schwer was born on April 9, 1929, in Superior, Wis., the daughter of Oscar and Marie (Devos) Matten. She and a twin brother, Clarence, were adopted by Henry and Lena Schwer of Olivia, Minn., when they were 11 months old after being put in an orphanage in St. Paul, Minn., at 4 months old.

Clara attended Danube High School in Danube, Minn., and graduated in 1948. She then attended the School of Agriculture in St. Paul, majoring in Home Economics and graduated in March of 1950. That is where she met her husband, Donald R. Bulfer, and they were united in marriage on April 29, 1950, in Olivia, Minn., at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Clara and Don lived on the farm a few miles west of Fairmont for over 65 years. They have four children: Jerome, Julie, David and Debra.

Clara enjoyed being a homemaker, taking care of her family, gardening and helping her husband with farming activities. They were members of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont where she was active in her parish and belonged to the CCW, St. Isadore’s Circle, Catholic Daughters, the church choir, a sewing club and the Sunshine Club. In their early years, Clara and Don were members of NFO and the Farm Bureau organization.

Clara enjoyed going on bus trips with her husband in their later years and visiting out-of-state relatives. She loved reading and also made many crafts including at least forty quilts. Family gatherings were always a high priority along with church activities. Her faith was always a vital part of who she was.

Left to cherish her memory include her children, Jerome (Debra) Bulfer, Julie Hill, David (Sandy) Bulfer, and Debra (Jim) Pope; 17 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Fern Bulfer, Kathryn Crowley, Eunice Bulfer, and Ruth Lenort; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with her biological and adoptive parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Bulfer; twin brother, Clarence; infant grandchildren, David J. Bulfer Jr., and Jacqueline Sue Bulfer; and son-in-law, Jim Hill.
