ARMSTRONG — Mavis A. Snyder passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, at her home in Armstrong, Iowa, at the age of 97 years. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, at United Methodist Church in Armstrong, with Pastor Lyndon Roesler officiating. She will be laid to rest in Armstrong Grove Cemetery, Armstrong, Iowa.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Armstrong.

Mavis Arlene (Strong) Snyder was born Oct. 11, 1922, at the farm home of her parents Thomas Laverne and Marie (Schroeder) Strong, in Iowa Lake Township, Armstrong, Iowa, with Dr. West attending.

Mavis attended Iowa Lake Township, District 1 grade school walking to the country school at the young age of 4 years. She continued her high school education at Armstrong High School, graduating in 1939 at the age of 16.

For two winters after high school, she was employed at the East Side Cafe in Armstrong, owned by Ralph Rown. She earned a $1 a day in wages. Mavis chose Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, Minn., to further her education. She then became assistant to the Registrar at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., during World War II.

Mavis married Frank Snyder from Dolliver, Iowa, on Sept. 14, 1945, at United Methodist Church in Armstrong, Iowa. Frank was enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry, so they began their married life stationed at Fort Hood near Belton, Texas.

After Frank’s discharge from the service, Mavis and Frank returned to Armstrong to purchase a general grocery and dry goods store from Florence Mangold. In 1961, Mavis became a teller for the First Trust and Savings Bank employed by the John O’Neil family. She retired in 1989 after 28 years of service.

Mavis was active in the United Methodist Church having been baptized at the State Line Methodist Church, and then in 1940 she became a member of the Armstrong Church by confirmation. She enjoyed participating on the church administration board and organizing the Evening Circle of which she was the first president in the 1950s.

Mavis was a member of the Armstrong Library Board, a lifetime member of the Armstrong Heritage Museum, a member of the Wednesday Study Club, a member of The Blind Stitcher’s Club and a variety of card clubs.

She celebrated New Year’s Eve with the same group of friends for 65 years. Mavis traveled with dear friends to Europe, Canada, the Caribbean Islands and throughout the United States, including Hawaii.

Gardening was a special hobby, growing and arranging her own flowers. Photography was also a special hobby. Each year, her pictures and newspaper clippings filled an album. Her family appreciated her interest in genealogy and her many hours of research.

Mavis is survived by her children, Jeri Lynn Dockhorn of Clear Lake, Iowa, Margaret Lemire and her husband, Mark of Aitkin, Minn., and Paul Snyder of Lakeville, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, Frank’s birth and foster families, and friends who were all very dear to her.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Laverne (Vern) and Marie Strong; husband, Frank Snyder; son-in-law, Donald Dockhorn; brother and sister-in-law, Lyle, and Marjorie Strong; and brother, Eugene Strong.
