Gordon Lee Johnson was born March 2, 1936, in Hastings, Minn., son of Elmer and Mary (Smith) Johnson. Gordon graduated high school from Minnehaha Academy. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls where he earned his teaching degree.

On June 2, 1956, Gordon was united in marriage to Yvonne Erickson at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis, Minn. This union was blessed with four children: Gregory, Douglas, Kristin and Brett. The couple resided in Hastings, Minn. and Cottonwood, Minn., before moving to Fairmont in 1968. Gordon and Yvonne shared over 60 years together before Vonnie passed away on June 17, 2016.

Gordon began his teaching career in Cottonwood before becoming a math teacher at Fairmont High School in 1968. He was a respected teacher and colleague to many before his retirement in 1993. He remained close friends with his fellow teachers even after retirement. It didn’t matter where he was, but often you would find “Mr. Johnson” taking the time to stop and visit with a former student, many of whom said he was one of their favorite teachers. He had a great memory for names and was genuinely interested in how their lives were going.

Gordy loved the Lord and was a long-time member of Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont. He was an active volunteer for many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Medivan, CREST, Martin County Youth for Christ, and was a basketball referee.

During his free time, Gordy enjoyed being a HAM radio operator as well as riding his motorcycle and bicycle, camping with his family, watching sports, going to the Dairy Freeze, and having coffee with his friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Greg Johnson and his wife, Michele of Ormsby, Minn., Doug Johnson of Blue Earth, Minn., Kris Johnson and her husband, Stan of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Brett Johnson of Rochester, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Kok and her husband, Bob of Cambridge, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Johnson of Hastings, Minn., Linda Johnson of Hastings, Marjorie Erickson of Minneapolis, Minn.; brother-in-law, Curtis Erickson and his wife, Caroline of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Gordy most loved being able to spend time with his family.

Along with his parents, Elmer and Mary Johnson, Gordon was preceded in death by his loving wife, Yvonne Johnson; brothers, Verlyn Johnson and Ronald Johnson; brothers-in-law, Dayle Erickson and Vincent Knoll; and sister-in-law, Ruth Erickson.
