TRUMAN — A funeral service for Herman Junior Schwanz, 86, of rural Truman, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, South Branch, rural St. James, Minn., with Rev. Matthew Rusert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Herman was called to his eternal rest on Saturday evening, Aug. 26, 2017, at his home in South Branch Township, rural Truman, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday, Aug. 31, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in South Branch Township, rural St. James.

Herman Junior Schwanz was born to Herman and Anna (Klinger) Schwanz in South Branch Township, Watonwan County, Minn. He was baptized and later confirmed both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in South Branch, rural St. James. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School at South Branch and graduated from the eighth grade. Herman then attended school in Truman.

On Nov. 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Carol Peterson at Waverly Lutheran Church. After their marriage, they made their home on a farm near Truman where he farmed. Herman was employed at Truman Farmers Elevator (TFE) for several years.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in South Branch and was Treasurer of South Branch Township Board.

Herman enjoyed going camping, snowmobiling, and collecting John Deere tractors. Most of all spending time with family and attending family gatherings were important to him.

He is survived by his three children, daughter, Debra (John) Meng of St. Cloud, Minn., sons, Doug (Vicky) Schwanz of Truman and Dan Schwanz of rural Truman; seven grandchildren and their families, Connie (Bill) Hoops and their sons, Jordan (Shelbey Jurek) and their children, Calvin and Waylon, Joshua and Joel; Chad (Jen) Meng and their children, Brandon and Brooklyn; Derik (Rise’) Schwanz and their children, Logan and Aubree; Mychal (Juliann) Schwanz and their children, Louden and Livia; Philip (Megan) Schwanz and their children, Ashlyn, Hannah and Holden; Cody Schwanz and Sarah Schwanz; brother, George (Mary Jo) Schwanz; sister, Ruth (Herman) Wentzel; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille Schwanz, Eleanor Lubitz, Faye Draper, Phyllis Peterson, Doyle (Arlene) Peterson, Geri Peterson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol on May 8, 2015; great-grandson, Levi Schwanz; brothers, Gilbert and Martin (Doris) Schwanz; sisters, Esther (Emil) Vogt, Evelyn (Robert) Bonkoski, Gertrude (Hank) Mau, Loretta (Donnie) Anderson, Dorothy (Floris) Kettner, Marlene Schwanz, Veda Schwanz; brothers-in-law, Merle Peterson, Clair (Blenda) Peterson, Lester (Lydia) Peterson, Lowell Peterson, Arlo (Ellen) Peterson, George Draper, and Lavern Lubitz; sister-in-law, Thelma (Cletus) Schmellen and Ardis (Bob) Bast; and other relatives.
