Nicholas John Steinbach

EDINA — Nicholas John Steinbach, age 96, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017. Private graveside services will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Waverly, Iowa, to John and Margaret (Schell). His family lived in a number of locations in the Midwest before settling in Blue Earth, Minn.

Nick worked for Murphy Motor Company in Blue Earth. When WWII began, the U.S. Army formed the John Deere Battalion and encouraged men who knew mechanics and managing parts to enlist. Nick enlisted and was sworn in at Fort Snelling. He served from November 1942 to January 1946. Basics were at Camp Sutton in South Carolina and he was stationed at the LA County Fairgrounds in Pomona, Calif., before sailing to England on the Queen Elizabeth. During D-Day, his company was based in Warminster, England, and shortly afterward, was stationed in Manage, Belgium. Nick returned on the USS Argentina and was discharged at Camp McCoy, Wis. He arrived home on his 25th birthday.

Nick married Faye Margaret (Morgan White) Scott in 1955 and they lived in Winnebago until he took a job with Dahlberg Brothers Ford dealership in Hopkins in 1962.

Nick is survived by stepdaughter, Lila Mae (White) McKay of Plymouth; her five children; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” of Mason City, and Theresa of Oklahoma City; many nieces and nephews, as well as great-grandnieces and nephews.
