George H. Janssen was born March 19, 1927, in Bancroft, Iowa, the son of Henry and Anna (Stroebel) Janssen.
He received his education from the Grant Consolidated School in Ledyard, Iowa. Following the completion of his education, George entered the U.S. Army on June 14, 1945. He served his country proudly during World War II and was stationed overseas in France. On June 16, 1947, George received his honorable discharge and returned home. On Feb. 5, 1947, George was united in marriage to Evelyn Francis Angle. Together the couple was blessed with three children, Dan, Debra, and Dennis. After Evelyn’s passing, George was blessed with love again as he met and married Redina Olga Welchlin-Roehler on Nov. 15, 1975, and welcomed Redina’s three children, Judy, James, and JoAnn into his family. George and his family made their home in Fairmont where he worked for the Fairmont Public Utilities for 38 years, retiring on Sept. 1, 1986.
George was extremely active in the Fairmont community and enjoyed volunteering for many projects with the United Methodist Church, Meals on Wheels, and Salvation Army. His work as a volunteer earned him the Golden Deeds Award, an award he humbly accepted. In his spare time, George enjoyed sneaking away for a round of golf at Rose Lake Golf Club and loved working on family projects with all six of his children receiving his personal touch on their homes. In addition to volunteering, George kept busy as a Boy Scouts Troop 57 Leader and was also a trustee for the United Methodist Church in Fairmont for many years. He was proud of his time in the military and found great joy in being a member of the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1222 where he served as commander for two years and was a member of the Honor Guard for 22 years. George’s kind spirit and helpful ways will be greatly missed by those that loved him and called him their friend.
