Red Robin loses $174 million

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) — Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc. on Wednesday reported a first-quarter loss of $174.3 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Greenwood Village, Colorado-based company said it had a loss of $13.51 per share. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $6.66 per share.

The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $1.61 per share.

The casual restaurant chain posted revenue of $306.1 million in the period.

Red Robin shares have dropped 49% since the beginning of the year. The stock has fallen 36% in the last 12 months.

Guess reports loss of $158 million

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Guess Inc. on Wednesday reported a loss of $157.7 million in its fiscal first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Los Angeles-based company said it had a loss of $2.40. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $1.81 per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 99 cents per share.

The clothing company posted revenue of $260.3 million in the period, which also missed Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $318.1 million.

Guess shares have fallen 43% since the beginning of the year. The stock has decreased 11% in the last 12 months.

Russia detains managers of plant

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian authorities have detained three top managers of an Arctic power plant that leaked 20,000 tons of diesel fuel into the ecologically fragile region.

Plant director Pavel Smirnov, chief engineer Alexei Stepanov and his deputy, Yuri Kuznetsov, have been detained on suspicion of violating environmental regulations, the spokeswoman of Russia’s Investigative Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, said Wednesday.

Together with Vyacheslav Starostin, another manager at the plant arrested and charged earlier this month, they may face up to five years in prison.
