Man killed trying to rescue turtle

RACINE, Wis. (AP) — A tow truck driver attempting to rescue a turtle Friday on an interstate highway in southeastern Wisconsin was struck and killed by a semi-trailer driver who then fled the scene, authorities said.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said the driver of the tow truck stopped with its lights on to remove the turtle from northbound Interstate 94 near Seven Mile Road in Racine County. The victim was walking on the shoulder of the road when he was struck.

The semi was later found about 100 miles away in Ripon. No further details were available.

Another Asian giant hornet found

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A dead Asian giant hornet has been found in Washington state, and officials said Friday they were trying to learn if the honey bee predators have established colonies here.

The Washington state Department of Agriculture said it was the first confirmed sighting of an Asian giant hornet in Washington this year. The hornets are known as Murder Hornets in Japan, a name that state officials frown upon.

The hornet found this week was believed to be a queen, said Sven-Erik Spichiger, an entomologist for the agency.

“If we start finding workers we would know that colonies are established,” Spichiger said. “We are concerned.”

On Wednesday, a resident near the town of Custer in Whatcom County found the dead specimen while walking on a roadway and contacted WSDA.

State and federal labs confirmed that the specimen was an Asian giant hornet on Friday morning.

The hornet was detected near the location of a suspected Asian giant hornet bee kill in 2019.

Police find remains of child

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The remains of a second child that belonged to a Tennessee couple facing abuse charges have been found buried in a yard, court records said.

A search warrant affidavit says police recovered the remains of a boy from a Knox County property where Michael and Shirley Gray lived until about 2016, news outlets reported on Friday.

Police began searching the property after finding the body of a girl buried under a barn at the Gray’s current home in nearby Roane County.

The Grays had three children in their custody when they were arrested Monday on charges of aggravated child abuse, especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated child neglect and abuse of a corpse, authorities said.

According to the search warrant, police think the remains found in Knox County belong to the couple’s adopted son, Jonathan Gray, who likely died in 2015 or 2016.
