Hundreds demonstrate in St. Paul

ST. PAUL (AP) — Several hundred demonstrators rallied late Wednesday at the state Capitol in St. Paul before marching onto an interstate to protest a grand jury’s decision not to indict Louisville, Kentucky police officers in Breonna Taylor’s death.

Protesters denounced what they said was a criminal justice system that has failed to hold the officers accountable for Taylor’s death. Taylor, a Black emergency medical worker, was shot multiple times by white officers who entered her home during a narcotics investigation in March.

The marchers walked onto I-94 about 8 p.m., shutting down the eastbound lanes of the freeway. State troopers later forced them off the interstate and the crowd marched back to the Capitol before dispersing about an hour later.

Fort Dodge man held in shooting

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A Fort Dodge man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting last weekend of a woman there.

Denharrio Lewil, 18, appeared in a Webster County court on the charge Wednesday, when his bond was set at $1 million cash, The Messenger reported. Lewil had intially been charged with attempted murder, but the charge was upgraded to murder on Wednesday, a day after the victim died.

Lewil stands accused in the death of 18-year-old Jlynn Beason, of Fort Dodge. Police said the shooting happened early Sunday morning when Lewil and Beason’s brother got into an argument. Police believe Lewill pulled a gun and, targeting Beason’s brother, shot several times at the car the brother was in. Beason, who was also in the car, was hit by at least one of the bullets.

Beason was taken to a local hospital, then to a Des Moines hospital, where she died Tuesday.

3 slayings tied to one suspect

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Police in Rapid City have tied the slayings of three people in recent weeks to one suspect and say the case may be drug-related.

The latest victim was found Tuesday in near Sheridan Lake, about 25 miles from where two people were found fatally shot in a Rapid City park. Twenty-two-year-old Dakota Zaiser, of Rapid City, had been missing since the two were found dead in Thomson Park Aug. 24.

Detectives believe Zaiser was hanging out with the suspect and may have been in the area during the shooting at the park, according to police spokesman Brendyn Medina. Detectives wanted to talk to Zaiser to see if he had information about the shooting, he said.
