Sherburn addresses theatre facility concerns

By Sharon Rosen 3 min read

SHERBURN -- The Sherburn City Council met on Monday evening. The first agenda item was a request from Martin County West Schools and MCW Community Education and Recreation about use of Sherburn Community Building/Sherburn Theatre bathrooms.

Three school representatives attended the meeting. Sherburn Elementary Principal/MCW CER Director Nickole Bowie addressed the Sherburn Community Building/Sherburn Theatre's basement bathrooms. The council explained the necessity for those bathrooms to be out of order because of water damage, old pipes and leaks.

Bowie expressed concern about the amount of people expected at the four performances of the school play later this month. She mentioned that a CER class was using the building every Wednesday. Trips to the one bathroom that works on the theater floor are inconvenient, time-consuming and staff-consuming. There is a need for at least two bathrooms.

Sherburn City Clerk/Treasurer Andrea Ballard explained that a company will work on the pipes and get the second bathroom working on the theatre floor, hopefully before the school play dates since they are coming for one or two days on Nov. 12.

The Carbo Mechanical company will charge $2,500 to repair the bathroom on the theater floor.

A concern about what would happen if the one bathroom fails was brought up. Bowie asked what the update was and what the city could do. She asked that timely and reasonable action would be proactive in this case.

The council explained that the basement bathrooms are not ready to be fixed and it would cost a minimum of $73,000 to look into repairs.

The report from Bolton and Menk on community buildings included the Sherburn Community Building/Sherburn Theatre. It may be years before the situation could be redone for use. Any suggestions may be to hold the classes and play at a different location. They suggested an outdoor portable restroom for large crowds for the near future. Ballard will update MCW CER and MCW Schools about decisions made that would affect them.
