FAIRMONT-- There's a new way to beat the Sunday scaries. Imagine Martin's new concert series, This Song's for you, will kick off in Fairmont inside The Hive on Sunday, Nov. 1 with a unique and intimate performance to follow at 7 p.m. on the first Sunday evening of the month through March.
Imagine Martin's chair, Jeff Rouse, said when they fixed up and opened the The Hive inside the Michael and Elizabeth Garry Building, they did so with Imagine Martin's mission in mind, inspire to create.
"The Hive falls into that category very much so, because it's a place for people to create, attend and be part of anything to do with the arts," he said.
Since it opened in May, the space has been utilized by non-profits and businesses for meetings and events and there's been a variety of workshops held there, too.
"We're very happy with not only the number of activities that have taken place, but the quality and variety of the activities and events that have taken place," Rouse said.
The idea for the new series, which celebrates music, songwriting and storytelling, came when an artist, Radoslav Lorkovic, reached out to Rouse saying he was interested in performing in the venue.
"Rad called me from Croatia. I've known him and have enjoyed his music. He said he was following Imagine Martin on Facebook and our website and that he was having a big gig in Minneapolis on Halloween night. He asked if he could come down to The Hive on Sunday," Rouse explained.
He said Imagine Martin's board was already toying with the idea of a series of performances and the interest that was expressed motivated them to do the series, kicking it off with Rad on Nov. 1.
"I made some phone calls to other artists that we were aware of that were in a similar genre," Rouse said. "And I asked them if they would consider being a part of it. Each of them had large gigs, anywhere from Minneapolis to De Moines to Sioux Falls and were able to come to our venue because it worked into their schedule on a Sunday," Rouse said.
In addition to fitting into the artists' schedules, Rouse said they were already interested in Sunday performances for a few reasons.
"It's a chance for people to relax and unwind after their weekend and we also very much support the other venues and businesses that offer things throughout the weekend and we wanted to complement that, not take away from it," Rouse said.
He acknowledged the Red Rock Center for the Art's concert series, with most performances taking place Friday or Saturday, and also live music that happens regularly on weekend nights at the Marina Lodge.
The other artists slated to perform as part of the series at The Hive, including Erik Koskinen, Charlie Roth, David Stoddard and Kelly Smith are all in the genre of folk, light jazz and storytelling.
Rouse said it will be an intimate setting with limited seating and that refreshments and treats will be available.
Tickets for the concerts are $20 each or $15 each for Friends of the Hive and can be purchased at The Hub, which is Imagine Martin's other building, located next door to The Hive. The artists themselves are being paid for performing by sponsors, Roger and Beth Neist, Lee and Jeanie Kanten and Sue Anderson.
