SHERBURN -- The Sherburn City Council met on Monday and the council discussed a quote from Access Lift to repair the lift in the Community Building for $1,194. The other repairs needed for the Community Hall such as deteriorating structure, bathrooms closed, water lines and issues were discussed. A question of who uses the Community Hall part was answered by Clerk Andrea Ballard that there are several active users. The council tabled a decision until more information is brought to the council. A question of what repairs should be done if there are more repairs to be done and the building is closed eventually. The question of closing the lower part was not approved now.
In other business, the Contemporary Styles building owner Sarah Kramer reported some damage to the roof and wondered if the contractors that demolished the Foxy’s building next door had done the damage. There was damage to seal and a broken rafter and a hole noticed by a roofing company. The adjacent building was torn down on April 6, 2024. Water has leaked into the ceiling of Contemporary Styles. Kramer wanted to know what the procedure would be to get the damage fixed and who would be responsible--city, owner, demolition contractor, roofing company or no one.
The council discussed the pictures before and after Foxy’s building being torn down and it showed the demolition crew protecting the roof of the nearby building with plywood. Some pictures showed no damage and then some showed damage later. Bricks could have fallen from the older building, perhaps. There were four options considered: deny all responsibility, roofer and demo contractor pay, approve all damage, and table the decision for more information and contact the city attorney and the demo contractor asap so damage can be fixed before winter. The council approved the last option. Council Member Kramer abstained from the vote.
On Monday there was also a public hearing about the Well Head Protection Plan proposed. The proposal was explained from a report from the Minnesota Department of Public Health read by City Clerk Andrea Ballard and Deputy Clerk Sean Devenn and Public Works Employee Paul Schoen. The plan is mandated from federal and state rules to help protect against contamination of public water supply. There is a low level risk now and medium risk in the future. The Minnesota Department of Health will approve when the final draft is sent to them. There were no concerns raised from the council or the public. There are some grants available.
