American Red Cross blood drives will be today, Aug. 21, at the American Legion Hall in Fairmont, and Sept. 1 and 2 at the Best Western in Fairmont. Call 1-800-733-2767, visit wwwredcrossblood.org or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to make an appointment or find further information. Blood is urgently needed; donate if you are eligible (age 16 or older, weigh 110 pounds or more and are in good health). One donation may save the lives of three people.
The Circle of Faith parishes are having services in August at 9 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Trimont and 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran in Welcome. First Lutheran Church in Trimont will host an ice cream social from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, with barbecue, bars and ice cream. The proceeds will go to CREST.
The Sherburn Legion will have its Sweet Corn and Pork Chop Feed on August 23 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The menu includes a cabbage salad and dessert with a choice of regular or smoked chops and corn for $12.
We would like to thank all the volunteer firefighters, because there is a Volunteer Firefighters Day this week. Thank you for your service to Welcome. Also, congratulations to Welcome/Sherburn Police officer Carolyn Lyons for her commendation for her help to the Child and Family Advocacy Center.
The Trimont Farmers Market will not be held today, Aug. 21, because it coincides with the Martin County Fair. Good luck to all the fair exhibitors from FFA, 4-H, and open class. Plan to attend Minnesota’s Other Big Fair now through Sunday, Aug. 23.
Monday will be the first day of school for grades pre-K to 6 at Martin County West Schools. It will be the third day of school for grades 7-12 since they began on August 20, yesterday. This is an earlier start than usual because of the new school construction now and the demolition of the high school in 2027. September 7 is Labor Day, so there is no school that day.
Condolences to the family of LaVonne Kretzmann, who passed away recently. She will be missed by family and friends.
Memory Cafe support group for caregivers and the families of dementia patients will meet at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, at Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn. The public is welcome to join this free support group.
Coffee Hours continue from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Sherburn. In September, the Coffee Hours will be held from 8:3o to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at St. Paul Community Church in Welcome. Join friends and neighbors for great fellowship and good coffee and treats each Tuesday.
The Friendship Club from St. John Lutheran in Sherburn will meet at noon on September 14 at the Ranch Restaurant in Fairmont. Area residents are welcome to join them. Membership in the club or at St. John’s is not required. Plan to attend for fun and fellowship.
