SHERBURN -- The Martin County West (MCW) School Board met on Monday evening.

The R.A.Morton representative gave a building project update. The underground plumbing is complete. The mechanical room and boiler room are in the works. The lighting by the track is underway. The large rectangle window in the front is almost ready to be put in. The electrical is in the walls. The track lines must be exact and they were worked on and the goal posts.

The fence posts around the track are in and the concrete has been worked on for 11 months and they plan to have that completed by September. Framing and masonry are to be worked on in October and dry wall is to be worked on in December. He remarked that the construction is on schedule.

When the board asked about the quality he mentioned that the fire proofing was inspected and a mistake was found and it was corrected and that is how all work is inspected and of good quality. The grass for the football field needs a whole season so there will be no games played on it in 2027 but it will be ready in 2028.

The board meeting continued with discussion about the sheds for storage of athletic equipment, Community Education and Recreation (CER), shops, bulk supplies, building and grounds and exterior electrical transformer. Five options were discussed including moving sheds, building sheds or remodeling sheds. A decision about the shed near the stadium is needed soon. The board approved asking for bids about the track shed.

The principals' reports followed. MCW High School Principal Autumn Welcome reported online registration is almost done, practices for activities are beginning, homecoming week is scheduled for Sept. 21-25 with the football game at 7 p.m. on the 25th, several college in the schools courses are planned and eligibility for fall sports were sent out.

Michele Baker, principal at Trimont, reported that quite a few parents have used the parent portal, the chocolate bar fundraisers are planned for the end of September and the first part of October, Fast Bridge will be used to help assess the student’s skills and registration is underway.

Sherburn Elementary Principal and CER Coordinator Nickole Bowie said that class lists have been made, registration is ongoing, title one evaluations will be held as school starts and the custodial staff has done great work to make the school clean to start the year.

The CER schedule is full of activities, including flag football, tech with Nickie, tackle football for fourth and sixth grade students, Mini Magic Gymnastics try-outs, Spanish class, babysitting, art classes, estate planning classes and Kinder Kamp for those entering kindergarten.

A suggestion came up during board reports, that teachers have their students clean up their space and put their chair on the top of their desk, which would save the custodial staff some time. Sherburn Elementary School students do this and clean up in the hallways on their way out of school.
