Last day to swim in Truman on Sunday, Aug. 23

TRUMAN -- A free informational pool party to learn about Girl Scouts troops in the area will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, Aug. 20, at the Truman Swimming Pool.

Bravo Zulu House's kennel ribbon cutting and introduction of Polar the station dog will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21. For more information about Bravo Zulu House, visit bravozuluhouse.org.

Lewisville Ambulance will host American Red Cross Blood Drive from 2 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Lewisville Legion. A Martin County Veteran presentation about military experiences of Chase Crawford will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Martin County Historical Society Pioneer Museum in Fairmont. There is no charge and the public is invited to attend.

Sunday, Aug. 23 is the last day at the Truman Swimming Pool. The hours are 1 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. They are saying farewell to summer on Sunday evening with a late-night swim from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. for a $3 admission.

-School will soon be in session, so here are safety tips for all pedestrians.

-Cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections; don't cross mid-block and obey traffic signals.

-Make eye contact with drivers and ensure they see you and will stop.

-Clearly show your intentions to cross. When you have a system to activate (flashing lights/beacon) use them.

-Watch for turning and passing vehicles.

-Look across all lanes for moving vehicles before proceeding.

-Continue to be alert and watch for vehicles when walking in a crosswalk--drivers aren't always looking.

-Use sidewalks where provided--Where no sidewalks are provided, it is usually safer to walk facing traffic.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds the public that state law prohibits placement of private signs of any kind (i.e., political, lost pet, garage sale and other advertising signage) on highway right-of-way including driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches, sight corners at intersections and boulevards in urban areas. In addition, the Minnesota Outdoor Advertising Control Act prohibits placing advertising devices on public utility poles, trees, shrubs and by painting or drawing on rocks or natural features. Signs placed in the right-of-way will be removed.

Lock bags for cannabis are available at Sterling Pharmacy, Hy-Vee Pharmacy, Walgreens Pharmacy and Martin County Health and Human Services Building in Fairmont.
