3 min read

BRICELYN -- The Faribault County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 1:44 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, regarding a hog barn on fire at 49391 110th Street in Bricelyn, from Frost Fire Department Fire Chief Nick Olson, who was a passerby. Olson notified the Faribault County Sheriff’s Office that a County Wide Water Mutual Aid call was needed and that both Blue Earth Fire Department and Wells Fire Department Ariel’s were also in need. Hog site workers were not present, and an initial attack was started by first responding fire departments. With the severity of the size of the fire, the water auger was requested from the Elmore Fire Department to help with the large amount of water needed. Water fill locations were set up in the cities of Blue Earth, Easton, Frost, Bricelyn and Wells, along with Landus Elevator in Rake, Iowa and Nutrien Ag Coop at their Marna location.

Fire was contained to the South Farrowing Barn and with the quick response of the local fire departments, the fire was prevented from spreading to the north farrowing barn and three others to the south. During the fire attack from fire departments, one hog site worker entered the north farrowing barn and needed medical assistance from the Frost Ambulance due to smoke inhalation. At this time, an additional ambulance was requested from the Blue Earth Ambulance but was later called off. The hog site worker refused transportation to Blue Earth UHD Emergency Room and was released to the site manager for monitoring. Additional help was requested from CFS to fill trucks on site with Diesel along with Leland Drainage and Excavating and G and S Drainage and Excavating for help in dismantling the building for better fire attacks. Fire loss was limited to one farrowing barn with 624 pigs inside. The fire is still under investigation by the Frost Fire Department, the State Fire Marshals Office, and the U.S.D.A.

The responding departments consisted of Frost Fire Department, Elmore Fire Department, Blue Earth Fire Department, Winnebago Fire Department, Delevan Fire Department, Easton Fire Department, Minnesota Lake Fire Department, Wells Fire Department, Bricelyn Fire Department, Kiester Fire Department, Walters Fire Department, Alden Fire Department, Rake Fire Department, Mapleton Fire Department, Frost Area Ambulance, Blue Earth Ambulance, Faribault County Sheriff’s Office, Faribault County Fire Relief Trailer, Blue Earth Fire Department Air Supply Trailer, Leland Drainage & Excavating, G and S Drainage and Excavating, The U.S.D.A., Landus Coop, Nutrien Ag Coop, Frost Benco, CFS Fuel Delivery and the Minnesota Fire marshal.
