Filing opens for next city and school board leaders

MARTIN COUNTY — In the city elections across Martin County, mayoral, city council and school board seats are up for election and will be open for filing starting today.

For Fairmont, Lee Baarts’ four-year mayoral seat was last open in 2022, when he beat Charles Pearson 2,303-1,333. Wards one and three are also up for election. After losing to Deb Foster in 2022, Randy Lubenow won the Ward three seat in 2024 after filling in for Foster when she left. Ward one was last up for election in 2022, when Jay Maynard beat John Davis 615-533.

The current Ceylon Mayor is Judith Perkins, who beat John Gibeau for a two-year term in 2024 by 15 votes, and the four-year councilor seats of Lon Oelke and Wayne Walter are up for election.

Dunnell currently has one vacant spot that will be up for election after Dean Janssen resigned. The other seat is currently held by Kayla Sybrant, after Terry Helmers resigned. Mayor Marlin Bliesmer’s seat is up; he ran unopposed in 2024.

Granada’s mayoral spot is held by Darren Maday, who ran unopposed for his four-year term in 2022. Councilors Kevin Schleininger and Matt Brown, who narrowly beat Philip Schult and Linda Hanning, have their four-year councilor seats up for election.

Northrop’s mayor, Tom Wakey, ran unopposed for his four-year seat in 2022, and Councilors Bart Johnson and Kevin Schleininger also have four-year seats up for a vote.

Warren Olson’s Mayor seat is up for election in Sherburn. Tucker Schumann won over Doug Schroeder 409-138 in 2024, but resigned in December 2025, leading Olson to take over the remainder of his term. Brad Ringnell and Sarah Kramer have their city council seats up for election.

Trimont’s Mayor, Kevin Kuehl, has his seat up for election. He defeated JoAnn Russenberger 288-75 in 2024. Bradford Flohrs and Justin Lubben, who beat David Dale and Brenda Nielsen among others in 2022, have their seats open again this year.

Jake Ebert, who won Truman’s mayoral election on write-in votes in 2024 after no candidates filed, has his seat open in 2026. Chris Mosloski and Ronald Kelley have their seats up for grabs as well.

Welcome’s mayoral seat is currently held by Dan Schmidtke, who beat Kim Holm 230-163 in 2024. Holm currently holds one of the two city council seats up for election in 2026 alongside Lynda Stauter, who narrowly beat Jonathan Auringer 128-123 in 2022.

For the school boards, Granada-Huntley-East Chain has three seats open, currently held by Brad Mattson, Ken Madsen and Laura Koch. Superintendent Doug Storbeck said they want to see all six of their seats full, but if they don’t get enough participants, they may shrink down to five.

Fairmont has the seats of Jen Harris, Mari Myren, and Michael Edman open. Those three were the only three to run for the seats in 2022.

Martin County West has three seats as well, the ones currently held by Sarah Jagodzinske-Rohman, Danielle Wilmes and Nathan Vrieze. They were also the only three to run for those seats in 2022.

Finally, Truman’s seats held by Mike Pfeil, James Farnum and Maria Haler are also up for election. Haler narrowly beat Debbie Nietzke, 429-411, in 2022.
