Lions Club Fly-In Breakfast to take flight

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Lions Club annual Fly-In Breakfast is prepared for landing in the area, taking place from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 28, at the Fairmont Municipal Airport.

“It’s part of our tradition that we’ve done for years and years and years,” said Fairmont Lions Club President, Jim Davison. “I have only been involved for a few years, but the most important part of it is that it’s very gratifying to see all the people who show up for this. It’s a tradition, and it’s a tradition that’s excellent for Fairmont because all the money that we get goes back to the community. We have lots and lots of different organizations that need funding, and we’re happy to fund their programs.”

At the event, the Fairmont Lions Club will serve pancakes, eggs, sausages, milk, orange juice and coffee, as various airplanes land on the airport’s 5,500-foot runway. If the weather is cooperative, select pilots will offer airplane rides for a fee to those attending. Davison said the event is also made possible by Olson Rentals, which is supplying the chairs and tables, and Airport Manager, Lee Steinkamp.

The event proceeds will support various, mostly local organizations. As the service group’s biggest fundraiser of the year, held for more than 50 years and repeatedly well-attended with an average of 600 to 800 people per year, the Fairmont Lions Club anticipates great success at the Fly-In Breakfast on Sunday.

“Fairmont is a city of traditions. You have Interlaken Heritage Days, you’ve got other organizations that have different things, and the Fairmont Lions Club is pretty well known for the Fly-In Breakfast. That’s a big deal for us. But, more importantly, we have found that this event creates a lot of funding for us, and that’s important because, you know, we’re at a point and we want to make sure that we can help as many organizations. That’s why we do it. We have a great group of alliances. There’s 24 of us. Some retired, some very actively working, but everyone’s volunteering. That’s what makes the best part of it,” Davison remarked.

Through the eyes of the Fairmont Lions Club, the recurring success of the Fly-In Breakfast has been a testament to Fairmont’s drive to support its own community.

“What’s really important, small communities. We all know that in order for us to exist, we have to rely on each other,” Davison explained.

The Sunday, June 28 weather forecast is sunny and warm, with a high of 90 and a low of 73. Fairmont Municipal Airport is located at 2160 East Blue Earth Avenue in Fairmont. Advance tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 10 and can be purchased at Fareway, State Bank of Fairmont, First Farmers and Merchants Bank, or from any Fairmont Lions Club member.

At the door, tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 10. Children under age 6 are admitted free.

“If you’re interested in helping Fairmont, come and spend time with your friends, enjoy a good breakfast, and we will use the proceeds well,” Davison said.

In the future agenda, the Fairmont Lions Club will operate the ring toss at the Martin County Fair in August. According to Davison, the Fairmont Lions Club is actively seeking new members.
