Sherburn OKs roof repair quote
SHERBURN — During the Sherburn City Council meeting on Monday evening, the council received a report for the Red Carpet Bar and Grill/Municipal Liquor Store in Sherburn. It listed approaching events, including a tasting event on Thursday, May 21. The report said a bartender had not been hired yet. The repair of the Municipal Liquor Store roof was discussed and a presentation from the inspection tour with the Garland company was shown. The recommendations and quotes were compared from Garland and from Patten company. There was a 15-year warranty from Patten. The council compared the quotes and the list of things to be completed. The council approved the contract with Patten, which quoted replacing the roof for about $11,000.
In other business, Jared Juhl from Custom Computers presented his suggestions and quotes for firewalls for city hall, water plant and fire department from Avast Ultimate Business Security company. He explained it’s like geo-fencing and said they had a one-year, three-year or five-year package.
He recommended using Guardian and getting a 70 G for city hall, so they could use segmenting and 50 G for the water and fire departments. He would have an office backup, which may cost $500 a year. The quote was about $1,500 a year. He listed some cities and other clients he works with.
The council discussed some of his points and aspects of the Midwest IT that they had asked about at a previous meeting. The clerk was asked to find out if Midwest IT had purchased or installed anything and if they had not rescinded the recommendation they approved at the previous meeting.
Following a discussion regarding the responsibility for boulevard trees, the council approved amending the city code with a new ordinance, which clearly set the responsibility on the owner of the property. The council asked that the city assist any resident who had a struggle with the issue with resources to try and discounts available. The clerk will write up an ordinance and policy for the next meeting. She mentioned that it may take some time and then there had to be two readings of the ordinance before the council could vote on it.
The council also discussed the payloader, which is 30 years old and in disrepair so it was recommended that it should be replaced. The Public Works employees were asked to get quotes on a new payloader with a snowplow and snowblower. The parts for the current payloader are sometimes not available due to age. The investment account was used to help pay the fire truck and that loan has been replaced. The investment account money may be used to purchase a new payloader. The State Bid will be used to sell the current payloader and that money could be used too.
The clerk’s report included the training sessions she attended as the third part of her training with the Clerk’s Institute. She said she learned many things and has tried to implement some in her office. She explained her overtime hours and said it is not easy to get all the things done that need to be done without some overtime. The council suggested a part-time employee do some filing or other jobs so she could get budgets, auditor reports and council requests done. She and the deputy clerk were happy to hear the suggestion.
The council asked the clerk to bring a list of some things that a temporary or part-time employee may help with in city hall and how many hours they may work. The report also mentioned that the Sherburn Lions Club proposed to have a fundraiser for the Sherburn Theatre to purchase the server needed to digitally show movies. The Sherburn Theatre has been silent for several months due to the expense of the server issue.
