Area Memorial Day programs planned

MARTIN COUNTY — The following communities have upcoming programs planned to commemorate Memorial Day, which is on Monday, May 25.

FAIRMONT — The Memorial Day ceremonies in Fairmont will begin with the raising of the flag by Sons of American Legion Squadron 36 at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at Veteran’s Park in Fairmont, followed by a parade route from Veteran’s Park to Veteran’s Memorial. The Memorial Day Program will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Martin County Veteran’s Memorial in Fairmont. The program includes post colors by the American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222, drum roll by Fairmont High School student Madisyn Peyman, raising of the flag by Sons of American Legion Squadron 36, pledge of allegiance by Steve Fosness, national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by Select Concert Choir, invocation by Cory Germain, military branch songs by FHS Band, Steve Fosness as master of ceremonies, “In Flanders Fields” by FHS student Allison Streit, guest speaker appearance by United States Congressman Brad Finstad, placing of wreath by the Girl Scouts, rifle salute by Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222, ringing of ship bell by Doug Landsteiner, “Echo Taps” performed by FHS students Jackson Henning and Landon Traetow and benediction by Cory Germain. The program and parade are arranged by American Legion 36, Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222, Sons of American Legion Squadron 36, Girl Scouts and music by FHS Band and Director Kate Kallenbach.

SHERBURN — The Memorial Day Program in Sherburn will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at Sherburn City Park. Eagle Scout Jonah Striemer will be the guest speaker. Following the program, the Boy Scouts will serve a picnic meal for a free-will donation. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held at Martin County West High School in Sherburn. The program is arranged by American Legion Post 356 in Sherburn.

WELCOME — The Memorial Day Program in Welcome will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Welcome Legion Hall. Ean Sinn will be the guest speaker. The program is arranged by American Legion Post 553 in Welcome.

TRUMAN — The Memorial Day Program in Truman will be 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Community Building in Truman. Kevin Lutterman will be the guest speaker. A lunch and bake sale will be at 11 a.m. Free-will donations will be accepted and can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

LEWISVILLE – The Memorial Day Program in Lewisville will include the American Legion Post 561 drill squad in Lewisville recognizing service members who died while serving the country at 8 a.m. at the American Legion Hall in Lewisville, 8:50 a.m. at South Branch Cemetery in South Branch Township, 9:10 a.m. at Ridge Lawn Cemetery in Truman, 9:20 a.m. at Antrim-St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Truman, 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Truman, 9:45 a.m. at Antrim Public Cemetery in Lewisville, 10:15 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery Willow Creek North in Willow Creek and at 10:45 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lewisville. This program is arranged by the American Legion 561 in Lewisville.

EAST CHAIN — The Memorial Day Program in East Chain will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the East Chain Activity Center. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8:45 a.m.

DUNNELL — The Memorial Day Program in Dunnell will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the City of Dunnell Community Hall. Refreshments will be served following the program.

BLUE EARTH — The Memorial Day Program in Blue Earth will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Memorial Square at the Riverside Cemetery in Blue Earth. The program will include “Fanfare Americana” performed by Blue Earth Area High School Band, American Legion Post 89 Vice Commander Paul Kafka as master of ceremonies, national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by BEA Band, invocation, readings of the Gettysburg Address and General Logan’s orders, placing of wreaths by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, “Service Medley” performed by BEA Band and the strewing of flowers in memory of servicemembers lost at sea or missing in action. The program is arranged by American Legion Post 89 in Blue Earth.

WINNEBAGO – The Memorial Day Program in Winnebago will be at noon on Monday, May 25. The program includes raising the flag, placing of wreaths, and recognizing and reading the Gold Stars family members of service members who died while serving the country and a rifle salute. The program is arranged by American Legion Post 82 in Winnebago.

ARMSTRONG, Iowa — The Memorial Day Program in Armstrong, Iowa, will be at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Armstrong Community Center. Veterans will be honored at the cemetery.
