Civic and Commerce Club taking donations for plants

SHERBURN — A CREST Lunch and Learn program will be at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 20, at the First Lutheran Church in Trimont, followed by a lunch. The speaker will present a program about hearing. These programs are free for Martin County senior citizens. CREST appreciates a free-will donation. RSVP to (507) 235-3833.

The Sherburn Legion will have its Hamburger Night from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 20. Purchase a burger, salad and beans for $12.

Dollars for Scholars Award Night will be at 6:45 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 20, at the Martin County West High School in Sherburn. Congratulations to the seniors who will be awarded scholarships.

MCW track and field teams will meet at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, at St. James. The golf teams will compete with Granda-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, at the Rose Lake Golf Course in Fairmont.

There will be no school on Friday, May 22, and Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. The seniors will have a Baccalaureate Service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dunnell. The last day of school and early dismissal will be on Friday, May 29.

Condolences to the families of Duane Beseke and Gerald (Jerry) Huse from Sherburn, who passed away recently. They will be missed by family and many friends.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 25. We remember that freedom isn’t free. The American Legion in Sherburn will host a Memorial Day event at 10:30 a.m. at Sherburn City Park. A new flag will be added to the Avenue of Flags as a memorial to Odell VanHyfte. The speaker will be Jonah Striemer, who is an Eagle Scout and Boys State representative.

The Boy Scouts will have a fundraiser picnic at the shelter house after the ceremony for a free-will donation. Bring lawn chairs and help remember armed service personnel from the area. In case of rain, the ceremony and picnic will be held at MCW High School in Sherburn. In preparation for the Memorial Day event, the avenue of flags needs to be assembled at the park. Anyone willing to help put flags up should be at the park at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 23. They plan to take the flags down at 6 p.m. on Monday, weather permitting. Thank you for the help.

The Sherburn Civic and Commerce Club fills the large planters on Main Street each year with beautiful plants. They would appreciate a free will donation to help support them financially with this project. Send any donation to Box 108, Sherburn, MN 56171. A small sign will be displayed in the planter with your name. Thank you for your support.

The Sherburn Summer Festival will be held on June 19 and June 20. That weekend, there will be city-wide garage sales. To get your garage sale on the map, which will be distributed at Casey’s and Bank Midwest, pay $10 and drop off the information at Bank Midwest by June 15.

Coffee Hours continue from 8:30 to 10 a.m. each Tuesday in May at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome. There is one more Tuesday in May. Join friends and neighbors for coffee, treats and fellowship. Coffee Hours on Tuesdays in June will be at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Sherburn.

The American Red Cross blood drives will be today, Wednesday, May 20, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, on June 2 and 3 at the Best Western in Fairmont, on June 19 at the Fairmont Legion, on June 15 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Trimont and on June 29 inTruman. Blood is needed every two seconds in the United States. The supply is low now, so give if you are eligible (ages 16 and up, weigh 110 or more and in good health). Thank you. St. John’s Lutheran Church Friendship Club will have a Day Trip on July 18 to the Plymouth Playhouse in Iowa to see the play, Church Basement Ladies sequel, “A Second Helping”. The cost is $120 per person, which includes bus transportation, dinner and the show. They need 40 people to sign up. The Friendship Club will meet for lunch at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 1, at Tami’s on the Ave in Fairmont. Area residents are welcome to join. Membership at St. John’s is not required.
