Ceylon views Rural Service District amendment

CEYLON — During its meeting on Tuesday, the Ceylon City Council had the first reading of the Rural Service District amendment, which uses a ratio of 25 percent of the taxes of property owners who use the utilities of water, sewer, etc., for the owners of property who do not use those utilities since the land is primarily agriculturally used.

The public hearing will be at the beginning of the June 9 meeting and may be approved that night. This is usually done annually.

The council read the Minnesota Joint Powers Agreement and the resolution that approved it. The council approved the resolutions. The clerk explained that this is connected to the Department of Public Safety in Minnesota and the city attorney. It is something done annually.

The meeting continued with city employee reports. The Southwest part of the city has had water problems and the inspector is expected soon. The city will flush the system next week so water may be affected. Nate Beckendorf said that he got a good bargain on a four-wheeler for $4,700 and an oil change. He also reported that the tractor is working well.

The fire department purchased a trailer and is looking to sell it to the fire association and then use the money for a grass rig through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. They are looking into a program that may help pay for training for new recruits.

The mayor suggested that the city concentrate on old unlicensed cars and tires for the first step of the clean up campaign and continue on other items when that part is cleaned up. She suggested that the septic system should be a priority and action is needed there, like grants and other actions.

In other news:

— The fire council reports included the Fire Association Meeting held lately.

— The council will have a city meeting with residents at 7 p.m. on June 2, at the park shelter house. This may turn into a quarterly event if successful. Topics for discussion are requested and the Council plans to have a listening session as part of that meeting.

The Ceylon City Council will meet at 6 p.m. on June 9 at the city hall.
