MCW School Board hears various reports

SHERBURN — The Martin County West (MCW) School Board met on Monday. After review of budget considerations from Dawn Sandbulte, sent from School Management Services, the board decided to use 600 as the projected enrollment number for budget development.

Superintendent Cori Reynolds said the MCW baseball team went to a Minnesota Twins vs Cincinnati Reds baseball game and met an MCW alumnus and Cincinnati Reds player, Brandon Williamson. She said one MCW student was featured as a KEYC Weather Kid.

MCW High School Principal Autumn Welcome explained that students are almost done with MCA testing. She said that there are open faculty positions for grades 7-12 ag/industrial arts, grades 7-12 science and a night custodian. The school is honoring its administrative professionals, Rachel and Molly. Summer school programs are being planned. The last day of school is May 28. The student achievement awards will be given then.

Trimont Elementary School Principal Michele Baker was excited to share that the language arts and reading curricula are ready for teachers. The students are almost done with MCA testing. Summer school programs are ready to help with support and enrichment. She celebrated the Math Madness month fun they had in March and thanked the teachers. The year-end field trips are planned, and the sixth grade walk through on May 29. The sixth grade will lead tours for the second-grade tour. They will be coming to the building next year.

Sherburn Elementary School Principal Nickole Bowie explained the student support team checking on progress and SAEBRS as part of that process. They enjoyed the tour of the new school construction and look forward to field trips like the zoo at Sioux Falls, S.D. Kindergarten round-up was in March, and approximately 90 people attended, which represented about 37 students. Kinder Kamp has begun. The ECFE Open House was well attended. As the Community Education and Recreation director, Bowie reported on the many activities coming up. Coach T, Storybook Theatre and lots of classes and summer events are planned. There will be a human services meeting on May 6.

— The board approved the construction payment of more than $2,874,576.

— The board approved the hiring of the following: Philip Rotunda as head boys basketball coach, Cliff Anderson as head girls basketball coach, Annie Post as head varsity gymnastics coach, Adam Williamson as head varsity wrestling coach, Tommy Wyant as high school art teacher, Meta Tewes as ag business teacher and Leisa Rahm as high school ESP.

— The board approved the transfer of Jenna Burmeister to a kindergarten teacher, Hannah Clough to a third-grade teacher and Jennifer Clow to a second-language English teacher.

— The board approved a wage raise for the custodian to $15.50.

— The board approved the proposed lease agreement with the City of Welcome for the Fox Lake Ball Fields in Welcome for $20,000. The City had given the board a budget amount of $14,000 as the last year maintenance.

— The board approved the 2027 graduation to be held at 7 p.m. on April 30, 2027.

— The board approved the 2026 budget revisions.

— The board approved a non-renewal of the contract as ELA teacher Sammi Jo Helmers-Nelson and, as done annually, Chelsea Brolsma and Alaina Baker on unrequested leave. The positions may be returned when enrollment is known for next year.

The MCW School Board’s next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on May 18 at Sherburn Elementary School.
