Welcome tables ball field purchase
WELCOME — The Welcome City Council on Tuesday tabled the discussion on the Fox Lake Sports Complex, which the Martin County West School Board is interested in buying back, because Monday’s school board meeting was postponed due to the snowstorm. It will instead be held on March 19 and the council representatives plan to attend that meeting.
In other business, Bolton and Menk Engineer Travis Winter reported that two grants applied for were denied, however the projects for water are progressing.
The clerk reported that the auditors will be at Welcome City Hall next week.
She spoke about the Positive Pay program at the bank to help detect payments that are incorrectly sent. This will help the city by alerting them to the checks that are not issued to the right place. She mentioned that the EDA (Economic Development Association) will meet on March 23 and the Park Board will meet on March 24. The Fire Department met, and the council reminded all that two people should attend those meetings.
In other news:
— A public comment was made concerning snow removal after the recent snowstorm and why the grader wasn’t used. The council said the public employee who knows how to run the grader was ill and the second employee doesn’t know how to run the grader. In addition, the second employee was busy doing work and could not run two pieces of equipment. The sweeper was used, but the bottom part of the snow was thick and wet and the sweeper did not push through it. Extra help was called, which cost the city $1,000-plus, but was needed. The storm piled more snow than ever removed in the city.
— Chief Trevor Yochim gave the yearly police report and the February police report. The council thanked the police department for a good year and for a detailed report each month.
— The trees near the North Dugan Street apartment building are in bad shape and there are ongoing plans to remove them.
The next meeting of the Welcome City Council will be at 6 p.m. on April 7 at the City Hall.
