Sherburn appoints new mayor

SHERBURN — On Monday evening, the Sherburn City Council appointed a mayor, Warren Olson. Olson took the oath of office and joined the council that evening.

The public works employee reported that his water training was helpful and that he is trying to implement some of the ideas brought out in the training. He explained that there was a categorization of water lines to homes done and one home had a lead line. One-hundred-eight out of 109 were unknown and the lead could be replaced using an EPA and Department of Health fund. The paperwork can begin soon.

He also said that there were two lights downtown that were snapped off at the head by the wind. He has a company that may have the replacements for them.

It was also reported that a lift station near TLR had a problem and it was restored. There were two signs that were snapped off by the wind, too, and they will be fixed. The water treatment plant’s building is ten years old and may need some waterproofing on the exterior. He reported that the sealcoating and crack sealing bids will be collected. The town will be divided into four sections and the sealcoating will be done to each section when its year is due. That way, it is organized and more can be done each year.

There will be a personal performance review for the Clerk/Treasurer Andrea Ballard. She had one at six months of employment, but has not had one since November. The council will review her performance.

The wage increase proposal was discussed and the personnel committee will report on the four full-time employees and the coda 2.88 percent increase and increases promised earlier. Some of the increases did not happen because the matter of the union members needed to be settled before that could be implemented. The union issue is not yet settled.

The clerk’s report included the need for a payloader soon and there is a sewer line project coming up that the engineers will help the town with as far as grants. The fire department was approved for a $15,000 grant for emergency lights on equipment. The clerk and deputy clerk will be attending a clerk’s conference, so City Hall will be closed next week.
