Ash Wednesday on Feb. 18
SHERBURN — Valentine’s Day is Saturday. The Sherburn Legion will have its Steak Fry Night from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Sherburn Legion Hall. The menu includes a ribeye ($22), shrimp ($18) or a smoked pork chop ($18), with salad bar, baked potato and garlic toast. That would be a nice evening with your sweetheart.
Sherburn City Council will meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Note the change of date since Monday is the President’s Day holiday. The City is accepting applications for the position of Mayor until March 11. Find further information at City Hall or by calling (507) 764-4491.
The Martin County West (MCW) School Board will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, with a hearing at 5:30 p.m. at Sherburn Elementary School. There will be no school on Monday, Feb. 16, which is Presidents’ Day.
MCW athletes are beginning to schedule sectional games. Magic Gymnastics will have sectionals on Feb. 12. Red Bull Wrestling will have sections on Feb. 12 and sectional finals on Feb. 14. The basketball teams have games on Feb. 13 with Cedar Mountain. The girls’ basketball team plays aganst Maple River on Feb. 10 and against Blue Earth Area on Feb. 13. The boys’ basketball team has a game against Fairmont Feb. 16. Good luck, Mavericks.
American Red Cross blood drives will be today, Feb. 11 at the Best Western in Fairmont, Feb. 20 at the American Legion in Fairmont, Feb. 23 at the St. Paul’s Community Church in Welcome and Feb. 24 at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. CREST’s Lunch and Learn program will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the First Lutheran Church in Trimont. The program’s presenter will be Stacy Shamblott from the MN State Services for the Blind. RSVP at (507) 235-3833. These programs are free for Martin County senior citizens. Ash Wednesday is on Feb. 18, and is the beginning of the Lent season. Area churches have special services that day. St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn will have a 6 p.m. communion service followed by a potato bake supper served by the Youth Group. Their partner Church, St. Paul’s in Wilbert, will have an Ash Wednesday communion service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a cooperative lunch. The partner churches are planning a joint service at 8 a.m. on Feb. 22 at Sherburn, followed by a second call meeting for a new senior pastor. St. John’s Youth is also selling Puff Pastry until March 1 with tentative delivery by March 17. Contact any youth group member or the church. The Circle of Faith Parishes will have Ash Wednesday joint services at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome. Area residents are welcome to join any of these Churches for services.
