MCW to perform musical, ‘Newsies’

SHERBURN — A CREST Lunch and Learn program will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Nov. 19 at First Lutheran Church in Trimont. These programs are free to senior citizens from Martin County. CREST appreciates a free-will donation for the lunch.

Hamburger Night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Nov. 19 at the Sherburn Legion. Get a burger, beans and salad for $10.

Nov. 21 is a busy day in Sherburn. The Martin County West (MCW) will have its musical “Newsies” at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children under five are free. There will be a concession stand and a bake sale. The musical portrays a newsboy protest against unfair conditions set in 1899 with energetic, rock, ragtime and memorable melodies. Support the school drama department and attend.

Turkey Bingo will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Sherburn Legion, with 30 bingo games, door prizes, and meat raffles. Sounds like fun for a good cause, and a Thanksgiving Turkey may be yours.

The Glows Parade in Fairmont will be at 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 from Downtown Plaza to Lincoln Park. It is one of the few winter parades in the area.

Sunday, Nov. 23, is a special day for the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn and their partner congregation St. Paul’s from Wilbert. They will have a joint service at 9 a.m. at St. John’s to bid farewell to long time Pastor, Steve Wilson, and his wife Bonnie. They will have a fellowship time after Pastor Wilson’s last service for the two congregations. Sherburn wishes the Wilsons the best in their future. On Nov. 30, there will be a change in the times of services for St. John’s to 8 a.m. only and for St. Paul’s Wilbert to 10 a.m. only.

A Santa Workshop will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Sherburn. There will be opportunities for the children to write a letter to and have a photo taken with Santa. There will be crafts, games, Christmas treats and a movie. This is sponsored by Temperance Lake Ridge, Bank Midwest, the City of Sherburn, County Line Customs and Sinn CLC.

A Memory Cafe support meeting for caregivers and family members of dementia patients in the area will be at 3 p.m. on Nov. 24 at Temperance Lake Ridge. All area people are welcome.

The American Red Cross Blood drives will be held on Nov. 25 and 26 at the Best Western in Fairmont, Dec. 1 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont and at the Regional Worship Center in Sherburn. The Martin County West School athletes are playing their Winter sports. The Girl’s Hockey team will play at the Fairmont Arena vs Waseca at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20. Nov. 21 the Boys Basketball team will play at Windom (scrimmages) at 5:30 p.m. On Nov. 24 the Girl’s Hockey will play at Simley at 7 p.m. The Girls Basketball team will play at Winthrop vs GFW at 7:15 p.m. On Nov. 25 the Girls Basketball team will play at Sherburn vs Madelia at 7 p.m. and the Boys Hockey will play at the Fairmont Arena vs Windom at 7 p.m. Good luck, Mavericks.

In upcoming events:

The Sherburn C&C will sponsor a free movie at the Sherburn Theatre from Dec. 5 to Dec. 7. They are not planning a tree decorating or vendor fair this year. Sherburn Theatre will feature “Zootopia 2” on Nov. 28-30. and December 5-7.

The Sherburn Lions will offer a Pancakes with Santa from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the high school cafeteria. There will be an opportunity for photos.

The Trimont Fire Relief Association and the MCW Community Foundation will have a Ham Bingo starting at 5 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Trimont. Proceeds go to the Trimont Food Shelf. Bingo players are asked to bring a food shelf donation.
