Programs at Red Rock continue without director

FAIRMONT– The Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont is looking for a new Executive Director to run the historic visual and performing non-profit arts organization.

The position had been filled for about 15 years by Sonja Fortune but last week she and the board parted ways. Now, the five member board, all of which are volunteers, is starting to search for a new Executive Director.

President Carol Justice said, “we’re looking for someone to bring new performers and artists to Martin County. It is an exciting time.”

She said the open position will soon be posted with a new job description and she encourages anyone with an interest in it to apply.

To start, Justice said they are looking for someone to fill in the interim for a three to six month period with the option to stay on permanently if they prove to be a good fit.

In the meantime, Justice said it’s business as usual at the Red Rock.

“Our Noon Lunch with the Arts are still happening once a month and we’re still continuing our Concert Series,” she said.

The next performance for that will be put on by On the Lash, A Celtic Christmas at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11.

Then, at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19, pianist Glenn Henricksen will play his annual Christmas concert at the Red Rock.

Tickets for both of those can still be purchased online. Justice said that either a board member or administrative assistant, Lisa Hagen will be able to answer questions.

Also on Dec. 13, Imagine Martin is holding a tour of homes with proceeds going to the Red Rock Center for the Arts.

The board is still actively pursuing funds as it will be engaging in a roof replacement project. Last month the Martin County Board of Commissioners approved $30,000 for the project and Justice said that they are hoping to get matching funds from the state.

In addition to an Executive Director, Justice said the board is looking for more committee members.

“I have challenged my board members to reach out to three to five community members to join us on a committee, either finance or building and equipment, scholarship, visual artist, vocal… we are looking for committee members to meet two to four times a year, that’s it,” Justice said.

Speaking to the importance of finding a new director to lead the organization, Justice said, “We are looking for someone to help us lead the performance arts and visual arts for Martin County into the future.”
