District responds to social media threat

FAIRMONT– Parents of students in the Fairmont Area School District were notified via email on Wednesday morning that late Tuesday night, the district was made aware of a potential threat an elementary student made to another student on social media platform Tik Tok Live.

Local law enforcement was contacted and the district deemed that as there was no credible threat to student or staff safety, school would operate normally on Wednesday.

Speaking to how the district approaches any potential threat, Superintendent Andy Treatow said, “Whenever a potential situation arises, we work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We are grateful for the response of the Fairmont Police Department in investigating this matter and updating us throughout the process.”

Traetow added, “We all must work together to ensure students understand the importance of using social media responsibly. To that end, if anyone becomes aware of a troubling social media post, please report it to your school office or local police immediately. We continue to take all threats very seriously and will do everything we can to protect our students and staff.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
