MCW Board hears various reports

SHERBURN — The Martin County West (MCW) School Board met on Monday evening and approved the construction funds draw for payment of $1,042,099-plus.

Superintendent Cori Reynolds gave the finance report and building project update. The board approved a building project proposal not to exceed $136,412-plus. It also approved the updates to the Crisis Management Plan and declared the Garden Shed surplus equipment and auctioned it to the highest bidder.

The Board Committee reports included the approval of the contract with the teachers and a report that the Operations Committee meets twice a week with the construction crews.

Trimont Elementary Principal Michelle Baker reported Reading Interventions, Parent-teacher conferences on Nov. 18 and 20 and a family engagement night focusing on literacy. They continue the Character Strong students of the month with sundaes on Mondays. Programming for English Learners for those who have a language different from English spoken at home is underway.

Sherburn Elementary K-2 Principal Nickole Bowie explained that Reading Corps Services to help students read at grade level before entering high school has been planned. Hearing and Vision screenings are complete. Fire Safety Day was successful with the Sherburn and Dunnell Fire Departments. In CER, the preschool started Sept. 8. The Advisory Committee looks for member(s), and anyone with good ideas for classes can let them know. The new dance instructor is Alexis Bryant. Mini Magic Gymnastics is moving along in the new space at the National Guard Armory in Fairmont. A new Adult Art Classes instructor is Caroline Porter, and she will begin with painting the December holiday ornaments. Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) has started an afternoon and an evening session. Cheer Camp will start in December with a two-day session. Open gym is coming. Basketball camps and Estate Planning are being planned.

The high school report included a plan for an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Nov. 12 sponsored by the National Honor Society, and a Veterans Day Program on Nov. 11. The MCW Gives Back event went well, with students going into the community to help.

The next MCW School Board will be at 6 p.m. on Nov. 17.
