Sherburn City Council looks at security

SHERBURN — During the Sherburn City Council’s meeting on Monday, Clerk Andrea Ballard reported that Troy Walsh did a safety and security audit at the City Hall as there have been some safety concerns lately at City Hall. The suggestions of a barrier and signage for employees only were implemented. Other safety and security concerns were discussed. Doors locked and access restricted and physical concerns were discussed.

Ballard gave a report on the Sherburn Library, which moved to the Senior Center. The electricity and power source for internet and phone service, transfer and repair of the east entrance doorway are required yet. The awning with the library name will not be attached because the outside of the building is different from the old library building. The Martin County Library system found a replacement that would have the library’s name on it.

The council discussed the old library building and the repairs needed for the roof. They approved letting that building out for sale with conditions that it be fixed and not just left to fall into more disrepair than it has already. They asked Ballard to advertise the building for sale with conditions. They would like a sale before winter. Ballard reported that there were not a lot of reports from companies to repair the roof. She will work with the city realtor about the sale.

Public Works and Ballard reported on a possible tractor rental agreement for almost $5,000 a month for a tractor big enough to help with the snow removal of the snow down the center of main street. The tractor would run the snow blower to put snow into a truck. The tractor would have to be a 195-horsepower large-frame tractor. Most places checked did not rent tractors. Public Works said the pay loader could be used, but it does not do what they would like and is busy elsewhere if there is a large amount of snow.

The council asked Ballard to advertise for a tractor rental from a farmer when it is needed to blow the snow piles into the truck.

In other business:

— The council approved a tax levy payable 2026 at 20 percent.

— The council approved a donation of $500 to the Martin County Foundation as a gambling fund donation for the Santa Workshop, which will have activities and special Santa visits available locally. It also approved a $20 donation from Carolyn Jacobsen to the park fund;

— The new van was purchased for Temperance Lake Ridge. This purchase was approved at the last Council meeting.

— The report from the insurance company concerning the vandalism to the city hall in 2023 said the expenses were recovered fully.

— Council Reports included an announcement that the ambulance is to be replaced next year. There are two ambulances from 1997 and 2006, which had approximately $14,000 in repairs completed. If a new ambulance was ordered, it would take about three years until delivery. The council will discuss this at another meeting.

— The council rescinded the motion made in the Sept. 15 meeting to renew the CD into a money market with an Estherville broker. It approved a motion to renew the CDs with Bank Midwest in Sherburn at 3.9 percent, instead of keeping the business local.

The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council will be at 5 p.m. on Oct. 20 at City Hall.
