Cancer Night at MCW volleyball game

SHERBURN — Today starts October. The older I get, the faster time goes by, it seems.

A CREST Lunch and Learn program about apples from Timberlake Orchard will be at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 1 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Sherburn. Following the program, lunch will be served and include beef stew, bread and jam, veggie sticks and dip and an apple dessert. These fun and educational programs are free to all senior citizens in Martin County. CREST appreciates a free-will donation for the lunch.

The Sherburn Legion will have their Hamburger Night from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Oct. 1. The menu includes a burger, salad and baked beans for only $10. Sounds yummy.

The Martin County West (MCW) volleyball team will have a home game versus Nicollet and their 16th-annual Block Out Cancer event on Oct. 2. Funds raised will be distributed directly to MCW families who are undergoing cancer treatment, have completed treatments or are coping with medical expenses not covered by insurance. Everyone is encouraged to wear light blue to raise awareness about all cancers. Scheduled events include survivor recognition, free admission, bake sales, silent auction, t-shirt sales, raffle tickets for a quilt from t-shirts with ones from the first 14 years of this event. One t-shirt will be from the late Deanna Garbers who was a former player, teacher and coach at MCW. One fun event is the volleyball serving contest with prizes. MCW Community Foundation and Fox Lake Area Sports Complex are large supporters. Condolences to the families of Kathy Lee, who was an artist that painted Martin County Barns pictures, and Gwenllyn (Kiehl) Wallfred, former Martin County resident, who passed away. They will be missed.

The Sherburn Library has significant problems on the building that require repair, and has moved to the Senior Center near the City Hall. They plan to keep the regular hours of 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Becky Tish will be there to serve the area residents.

The Community Chest annual drive is held from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31 in Sherburn. This once a year fundraising campaign helps fund important community programs and services. Easily contribute by mailing donations to Sherburn Community Chest at Box 504, Sherburn, MN 56171 or taking donations to the Bank Midwest in Sherburn. Every dollar stays in Sherburn to help families in need. Please be generous. Thank you.

Area churches are into their fall services schedules. St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Sherburn will have Sunday morning services at 10:30 a.m. from October to December. The Regional Worship Center has services at 10 a.m. on Sundays. St. John’s Lutheran Church will have two services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. until November when Pastor Wilson will retire. The Circle of Faith Parishes will have services in October at 9 a.m. in Ceylon (St. Peter) and at 10:30 a.m. at Waverly (north of Welcome). The Regional Worship Center in Sherburn will have a special Community Event for those who have had miscarriages and still birth infant loss to honor the infants and parents. This will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the Regional Worship Center, south of Interstate 90 in Sherburn. There will be speakers and snacks and the public is welcome for free. Options Pregnancy Center will have a booth.

Coffee Hours will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. each Tuesday in October at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Sherburn. Join friends and neighbors for a fun fellowship event with coffee and treats.

The American Red Cross blood drives will be held on Oct. 8 and 28 in Truman, Oct 6 in Trimont and Oct. 13 in Welcome. Call 800-733-2767 (800-red-cross), go online to www.redcrossblood.org or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to make an appointment and check out blood drives in the area.

The Mayo Mobile Clinic will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 6 and Oct. 8 near the City Hall in Sherburn. Call the appointment number at (507) 238-8500 and mention Sherburn Clinic.

The Sherburn Legion will have a Pancake Feed fundraiser to help defray the plumbing repair expenses from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 5. The menu includes pancakes, sausages, eggs and beverage. Help the Legion pay for the repairs and have a good breakfast too. The Minnesota Vikings play in London that morning.

The Friendship Club from St. John’s Lutheran Church will meet at 11 a.m. on Oct. 6 at the Home Town Cafe in St. James. Area residents are welcome to join. Membership at St. John’s Church is not required.

The CREST Caregiver Support Group will meet at 10 a.m. on Oct. 6 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Trimont. All caregivers and families of patients with dementia are welcome to join.

The Civic and Commerce Club of Sherburn will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Sinn Family Celebration of Life Center in Sherburn. Anyone interested in promoting Sherburn businesses is welcome to join them. Note the change of location.

The MCW football team will compete against St. James on Oct. 3 in St. James. The volleyball team will compete against Nicollect (Cancer Night) on Oct. 2 in Trimont, and against Blue Earth Area on Oct. 6 in Blue Earth. The cross country team will run on Oct. 2 at Cedar Creek Park in Fairmont.

Make a Difference Day will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church between services at 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 19.

The Sherburn Lions will have a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the MCW high school cafeteria, to raise funds for the Healing Hearts Recovery House in Sherburn.

The Sherburn Lions will have a Fill the Shelves Food Drive from 5 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the Sherburn Legion Hall.
